Russian drone strikes Ukrainian security service headquarters in central Kyiv

Direct hit on intelligence headquarters

A Russian drone struck the central headquarters of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) on Volodymyrska Street in central Kyiv on Friday afternoon. The hit took place across from Saint Sophia Cathedral, the oldest standing building in Kyiv and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Visual footage showed heavy black smoke pouring from two front windows of the government complex. Ukrainian Pravda reported that acting SBU head Oleksandr Poklad was not inside his office at the time of the explosion. Armed security officers cordoned off the surrounding roads within minutes of the blast while emergency responders arrived. Government buildings in Kyiv have rarely sustained direct damage during more than four and a half years of conflict, making the daylight hit unusual.

The drone was aimed directly at the office of the Head of the Security Service in that building.

Casualties and civilian damage

The explosion shattered nearby storefronts and injured several people across the Shevchenkivskyi district. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko initially reported five injuries, while later updates from municipal services and district authorities raised the count to between seven and nine people hurt. Across the street from the SBU complex, the premises of a popular local bakery named Zavertailo were destroyed in the blast. Local residents heard a brief high-pitched whine above the rooftops moments before the blast shook central city blocks. One resident, 33-year-old Oleh, noted that attacks in city centres were becoming a routine reality that would likely intensify. Emergency crews treated injured individuals on the scene while fire units brought the resulting blaze under control.

Retaliation orders and diplomatic reaction

Following the strike, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy conferred directly with Poklad to assess damages and establish an operational reply. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha condemned the timing of the strike, noting that it occurred ahead of potential United States mediation talks planned for the weekend. The SBU has played a central role in conducting long-range strikes against Russian strategic assets throughout the war, including a 2022 bridge bombing leading to Russian-occupied Crimea and a 2025 strike that damaged Russian strategic bombers. Zelenskyy announced that Ukrainian forces would mount a proportional response against Russian installations once operational preparations conclude.

I instructed Poklad to deliver an appropriate, tangible response and, where possible, one that mirrors this strike, to the Russians once everything is ready. Our military will support this response.

Escalation of daytime drone attacks

The strike on Volodymyrska Street occurred during a tenth consecutive day of Russian drone assaults against Kyiv. Two days prior, on Wednesday, an aerial strike hit a university facility in the city centre. Ukrainian air defense forces continue to confront shortages of United States-manufactured Patriot interceptor missiles while tracking new weapons deployed by Russian units. Russian forces have increasingly used jet-powered drones that achieve speeds up to 250 miles per hour, making them significantly harder to detect and shoot down before reaching urban targets. Elsewhere on Friday, the Russian defence ministry stated that its forces struck a cargo vessel berthed at the port of Chornomorsk and hit a commercial tanker near Odesa.
