Drone crashes near Solca in Suceava after brief flight in Romanian airspace

Airspace breach and emergency response

Radar systems operated by the Ministry of National Defence detected an aerial target over Ukraine on Thursday morning, 24 September 2026, navigating near the northern frontier of Romania. The object entered Romanian airspace through the northern section of Botoșani county directly from Ukraine, without crossing Moldova. Two Romanian Air Force F-16 fighter jets on air policing duty scrambled from the 86th Air Base in Borcea to track the flight path. The National Military Command Centre notified emergency services to alert border communities. Civil protection authorities broadcast a RO-Alert message to residents across Botoșani and Suceava counties at 06:26. Military radars tracked the target inside national airspace for approximately four minutes before the device lost altitude and disappeared from tracking displays.

Crash site and local disruption

The small aircraft came down in a wooded area near Solca, the smallest town in Suceava county. Emergency personnel from the Ministry of Internal Affairs quickly secured the perimeter. First responders identified the wreckage of a small drone, confirming that the impact caused neither human casualties, structural damage, nor any fire on the ground. To monitor the sector and support ground investigations, an IAR-330 SOCAT helicopter departed from the 95th Air Base in Bacău at 07:21. Local authorities implemented precautionary safety measures across the area. The Suceava Prefect's Institution confirmed that school classes were temporarily suspended until 10:00 in four nearby localities: Solca, Arbore, Botoșana, and Cacica.

Ministry of Defence assessment

Interim Minister of National Defence Radu Miruță addressed the operation, noting that Romanian forces had scrambled a total of eight fighter jets between midnight and Thursday morning. Technical teams recovered components of the aircraft for evaluation. Miruță stated that preliminary inspections pointed to technical characteristics somewhat newer than those seen on previous models recovered in the region. Addressing questions regarding air defence engagement protocols, Miruță outlined the constraints faced by military command during rapid border incursions.

The conditions to shoot down a drone must be met simultaneously. The drone did not fly for hours in Romania, but for four minutes. It is not a computer game where you just click with the mouse. There are situations where we do not make the decision because risks exist for the population.

Miruță also argued that the incident required a formal diplomatic response directed at Moscow, noting that defence actions operate strictly within a peacetime legal framework.

It is evident that a protest is needed against those who do not respect international law, such as the Russian Federation. The Romanian army is not in a war regime. The Romanian army and Romania are in a peacetime period.

Overnight activity along the border

The Suceava incident followed earlier military activity in the southern border sector during the night of 23 to 24 September. Military radar units detected a group of drones north of Chilia Veche on Ukrainian territory, close to the Danube border. At 04:41, authorities issued a RO-Alert notification for the population in northern Tulcea county, which remained active until 05:44. During the southern alert, two Spanish Air and Space Force F-18 fighter aircraft deployed under NATO enhanced air policing scrambled from the 57th Air Base in Mihail Kogălniceanu to monitor the perimeter. No border breaches occurred during that earlier patrol.
