Beier breaks deadlock in Stuttgart

Borussia Dortmund moved to the top of the Bundesliga table on Saturday with a 1-0 victory against VfB Stuttgart at the MHP Arena. Forward Maximilian Beier scored the decisive goal in the 70th minute, tapping in a low cross delivered by substitute Jobe Bellingham. The German attacker had earlier headed wide from close range in the fourth minute, while Stuttgart forward Bilal El Khannouss missed narrowly before half-time. Early in the second half, Dortmund saw an effort from Ethan Nwaneri ruled out for offside. Dortmund manager Niko Kovac introduced Bellingham and Konstantinos Karetsas in the 62nd minute to unlock the opposing defence after a scoreless opening period. Karetsas initiated the decisive move by finding Bellingham, who drove the ball across the penalty area for Beier's first goal of the league campaign. Karetsas missed an opportunity to extend the lead shortly afterwards when his effort drifted wide.

Squad responses and selection context

The victory put Dortmund at the summit of the Bundesliga for the first time since May 2023, ending a 1,212-day wait that followed their title-deciding draw with Mainz. It also marked the first time in a decade that Dortmund have won each of their opening four league fixtures. Beier produced the winning goal two days after missing out on Germany manager Jurgen Klopp's expanded 44-man squad announced on Thursday. Kovac expressed satisfaction with the forward's reaction after previously featuring in Germany's World Cup squad.

Teenage midfielder Karetsas returned to action off the bench after being stretchered off with a cardiovascular issue during a Champions League match earlier in September. Kovac brought on Portuguese forward Fabio Silva in the 74th minute to replace Serhou Guirassy against his former club, while Stuttgart lined up with nine German players in their starting eleven in the absence of the injured Tiago Tomas.

Dortmund hold 12 points from four consecutive league matches, creating a two-point advantage over Bayern Munich and Freiburg. Bayern moved to 10 points on Friday after defeating Union Berlin 7-0 at home. Freiburg missed the opportunity to stay level with Dortmund after drawing 2-2 against Eintracht Frankfurt earlier on Saturday. Frankfurt scored through Younes Ebnoutalib and Jonathan Burkardt, while Derry Scherhant and Yuito Suzuki earned Freiburg a point. Freiburg defender Philipp Treu, who received a call-up to Klopp's national squad alongside Ebnoutalib and Scherhant, noted his disappointment at failing to enter the international break in first place. Stuttgart sit in 14th place with three points after suffering their third loss in four league games under Sebastian Hoeness.

Results across the German top flight

Borussia Moenchengladbach remain at the bottom of the table with zero points following a 4-3 home loss to Mainz 05. Interim coach Jan-Moritz Lichte took charge of the team following the dismissal of Eugen Polanski six days prior, but Moenchengladbach have now conceded 16 goals across four matches. Florian Neuhaus opened the scoring for the hosts in the 11th minute before Phillip Tietz equalised seven minutes later, opening the way for three further Mainz goals. Elsewhere, Werder Bremen recovered from a two-goal deficit to defeat Augsburg 3-2, with Rodrigo Ribeiro featuring as a substitute for the visitors. Hamburg secured their first win of the campaign with a 2-1 home victory against Cologne, where Fabio Vieira started in midfield. Dortmund now enter the international break in first place before hosting Werder Bremen in their next Bundesliga fixture.
