Borussia Dortmund beat Hamburger SV 2:0 in Bundesliga opening match

Opening dominance and early breakthrough

Prior to kickoff, the stadium observed a moment of remembrance for former honorary captain Wolfgang Paul, who died in June. Borussia Dortmund opened their Bundesliga campaign with a 2:0 victory over Hamburger SV in front of 81,365 spectators at a sold-out Westfalenstadion. Konstantelias doubles the lead before halftime

Dortmund maintained control throughout the first half, pinning Hamburg back into their own half with aggressive counter-pressing that forced repeated clearances. Second-half injury and numerical disadvantage

Hamburg adjusted their approach after the interval and created several opportunities as the home team conceded additional space. Kobel saved a long-range attempt from Hamburg midfielder Albert Grönbaek before Dortmund missed opportunities to extend their lead through Karetsas and Konstantelias. Dortmund suffered a setback in the 54th minute when Konstantelias, signed from PAOK Thessaloniki, sustained a knee injury in a duel with Hamburg's Bakery Jatta. The 23-year-old winger walked off the pitch while holding his knee and had to be substituted. Hamburg forward Patson Daka tested Dortmund's defense shortly after, miscuing one effort and striking the post with another attempt. Dortmund were reduced to ten players in the 77th minute when substitute Samuele Inacio received a straight red card for a harsh tackle on Grönbaek.

Hamburg pressure and upcoming fixtures

Despite playing with a numerical advantage for roughly 20 minutes, Hamburg failed to alter the scoreline due to inaccurate finishing and saves by Kobel. The victory followed Dortmund's 1:2 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Supercup a week earlier, giving Kovac three points on the opening matchday despite missing defender Ramy Bensebaini due to a rib injury. Hamburg, led by head coach Merlin Polzin, will host Mainz 05 at the Volksparkstadion next Sunday at 15:30 in pursuit of their first league win. Dortmund will return to action on Tuesday at 20:45 against fifth-tier side HEBC in the DFB-Pokal, with the cup tie scheduled to take place at Hamburg's Volksparkstadion.
