Jérémy Doku signs new five-year deal at Manchester City until 2031

Jérémy Doku signed a new five-year contract with Manchester City on Thursday, extending his stay at the Etihad Stadium until 2031. The Belgian winger's previous deal, signed when he arrived from French side Rennes in the summer of 2023 for approximately €60 million, was due to run until 2028. The extension commits the 24-year-old to City for three additional seasons beyond his original terms and represents the club's fourth renewal of the summer, following new contracts for Phil Foden, Josko Gvardiol, and Abdukodir Khusanov.

In 131 appearances across all competitions, Doku has scored 22 goals for City. Sources differ on his assist total: Portuguese outlets report 29 assists, while French and Belgian sources cite 34. Last season alone, he featured in 47 matches across all competitions, registering 8 goals and 11 assists.

The club's announcement noted his blistering acceleration, exquisite ball control, sublime dribbling, and a great goalscoring instinct, describing him as one of the most talented and destabilising wingers in the Premier League.

Trophies and international career

Doku's contributions have helped City secure multiple trophies. Portuguese sources list four (Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup, and the Club World Cup in its former format), while RTBF counts five, adding the Community Shield. The 2023/24 Premier League title was part of the first four-peat by any English club.

At international level, Doku has earned 48 caps for Belgium and participated in the 2026 World Cup in North America, where the Red Devils reached the quarter-finals. His senior career began at Anderlecht before moves to Rennes and then City. The club noted his adaptability, having deployed him on the right flank and in interior positions as well as his habitual left wing.

Praise from club leadership

City's director of football, Hugo Viana, emphasised Doku's development since joining the club.

Jérémy is a huge talent whose evolution since he joined us in 2023 is evident to everyone. He has a special dynamic. He possesses the right characteristics for what we look for in a winger. He really brings a special quality to our team.

Viana also described Doku as "a fantastic person" who is "very loved throughout the club," with an attitude he called "first class." Viana added that Doku deserves the new contract and expressed confidence he will continue to develop in the coming months and years.

Looking ahead under Maresca

Doku expressed enthusiasm about playing under new manager Enzo Maresca, who succeeded Pep Guardiola. Maresca's system places heavy demands on wingers, a role suited to Doku's qualities. Doku said he has loved his time at City and that the opportunity to stay longer is a fantastic feeling, crediting the technical staff for his daily improvement.

Doku also pointed to the supporters as a factor in his decision, saying he feels their love and support, which "means everything" to him. He added that it is hard to explain how much the club does to help players and that he does not take it for granted. City face Arsenal in the Community Shield on Sunday, with the Premier League season beginning on 21 August.
