What is changing

Discord plans to make messages from its public servers findable through web search, including Google, without anyone having to join the community first. The company announced the change on 27 October. It covers only Discoverable Servers, the largest public tier, which need at least 1,000 members and must be eight weeks old to qualify. Discord says more than 63,000 servers fall into that group. Private servers, direct messages and group direct messages are not affected, and neither are the smaller community servers that require an invitation to join. Xataka describes the move as a step toward a Reddit-style model, in which discussion threads already appear among search results.

Rollout timeline

The rollout runs in two stages. From 16 November, every Discoverable Server gets its own Server Web Page showing basic information, a description and automated summaries of discussions in its public channels. By mid-December, messages from selected public channels can begin to appear on those pages and in search results, including Google. Discord describes the rollout as gradual, so the first messages may take several weeks to surface. Messages sent before mid-December will not be included, and the usernames and avatars of the people who wrote them will not be displayed.

Opt-outs and regional limits

Server admins can exclude channels from the web pages and search indexing, and the changes must be made before 16 November. If they change nothing, their public channels stay eligible. Individual users can adjust their account settings so that messages they write in those servers stay hidden from the feature, and the option sits in the Data and Privacy section of User Settings. In the EU, the UK, Canada, Brazil, Australia and South Korea, channel messages are switched off by default to comply with local rules, so users in those markets must opt in manually. Teen users are excluded altogether and cannot enable channel messages until they reach adulthood.

Discord's reasoning and privacy questions

Discord says many conversations that used to take place on forums have moved onto its servers, leaving answers to specialist questions, guides and fixes visible mostly to members. The company wants that material to reach a wider audience, such as someone looking for advice on a particular game boss or an item in a virtual world. The change arrives shortly after Discord faced backlash over its age verification policies, which could raise new privacy questions for the platform. Discord's announcement set out a two-stage schedule, with the first public-facing pages arriving on 16 November and message indexing starting only in mid-December.
