Amad Diallo's 90th-minute strike gives Ivory Coast 1-0 win over Ecuador
Amad Diallo scored a dramatic 90th-minute winner as Ivory Coast beat Ecuador 1-0 in their Group E opener at the 2026 World Cup, ending Ecuador's 19-match unbeaten run.
Dramatic group opener
The 2026 World Cup Group E campaign began with a tense clash at Philadelphia Stadium. Ivory Coast and Ecuador both sought a crucial three points in a group that earlier saw Germany thrash Curaçao 7-1. The Ivorians, returning to the tournament after missing 2018 and 2022, aimed for a first World Cup win since 2014. Ecuador entered the contest with a 19-match unbeaten streak dating back to September 2024, a record that would be severely tested.
Ecuador's woodwork nightmare
Ecuador dominated the first half, creating the clearer chances but finding the crossbar instead of the net. John Yeboah rattled the bar with a fierce shot from the edge of the area in the 24th minute. Six minutes later, Alan Minda struck the same piece of woodwork from inside the box after a fine move. The torment continued after the break when Enner Valencia saw his angled drive hit the outside of the post in the 47th minute. Ivory Coast also came close, with Wahi's volley crashing against the crossbar in the 52nd minute. In total, the match produced four strikes against the goal frame.

As the clock ticked down, it appeared the contest would finish as the first goalless draw of the tournament. Ecuador's sharp attacking play went unrewarded, while Ivory Coast grew into the game following second-half changes by coach Emerse Faé.
Diallo delivers at the death
Substitute Amad Diallo, introduced in the 56th minute, provided the breakthrough. In the 90th minute, Wilfried Singo surged down the right wing and delivered a low cross into the penalty area. The Manchester United midfielder timed his arrival perfectly and slotted a composed finish past goalkeeper Galíndez, sending the Ivorian bench and fans into delirium. The goal was a reward for Ivory Coast's improved second-half display and a crushing blow for Ecuador.
Historic win and group standings
The result ended Ecuador's long unbeaten run and gave Ivory Coast their first win against a South American side at a World Cup. The victory also marked the nation's first tournament success since Brazil 2014. Ivory Coast now sit level on three points with Germany at the top of Group E, while Ecuador and Curaçao remain without points. The Ivorians face a pivotal clash against Germany on 20 June, with a place in the knockout stage at stake.
