Ticket price to rise by 6% in 2027

Germany's Deutschlandticket will increase in price from €63 to €66.80 per month starting on 1 January 2027. The decision was reached on Wednesday by the coordination council responsible for the nationwide public transport pass, which brings together department heads from federal and state transport ministries, municipal associations, and transport sector representatives. The monthly €3.80 increase represents an adjustment of roughly 6%, lifting the total annual subscription cost to €801.60 (an annual rise of €45.60). Discounted variants will adjust in tandem, with the Jobticket rising to €63.46 per month and the university Semesterticket increasing to €40.08.

Mathematical formula replaces political negotiations

The price adjustment is the first calculated using an automated formula rather than direct political negotiations between federal and state leaders. The calculation, performed by the specialized company D-Tix, uses a cost index tracking changes in personnel wages, energy expenses, and general operating overheads across transport operators. The index also accounts for a fixed subsidy structure, as the federal government and state governments each provide €1.5 billion annually (a combined €3 billion per year) without automatic inflationary adjustments. Bavarian Transport Minister Christian Bernreiter, who chairs the state transport ministers conference, confirmed the figure as the direct output of the new index method.

Today's decision by the coordination council creates clarity early on.

Evolution since 2023 and passenger reactions

The Deutschlandticket launched in May 2023 at €49 per month as the successor to the temporary €9 monthly ticket introduced in summer 2022. The price increased to €58 in 2025 and to €63 at the beginning of 2026, meaning the new 2027 price sits roughly 36% above its initial launch rate. Approximately 14.5 million passengers currently subscribe to the monthly cancellable pass, according to the Association of German Transport Companies (VDV). Passenger association Pro Bahn expressed reservations regarding repeated fare increases, pointing to broader transport policy disparities.

In view of the fuel discount for drivers, it is necessary that there is also a discount for users of the Deutschlandticket. We would prefer that.

Parallel regional fare increases in Berlin and Brandenburg

Local transport networks are also adjusting base fares independently of the national subscription. The Berlin-Brandenburg transport association (VBB) is raising local ticket prices by an average of 3.72% at the turn of the year. Within Berlin's AB zone, single short-trip tickets will increase from €2.80 to €2.90, four-trip passes from €12.40 to €13.20, and 24-hour passes from €11.20 to €11.50, while standard single tickets will remain at €4.00. The monthly Umweltkarte for the Berlin AB zone will rise from €113 to €117.20, leaving the regional transferable pass considerably more expensive than the nationwide Deutschlandticket.
