While cruising over open water, the flight crew detected smoke spreading through the aircraft cabin and reported a technical malfunction. The pilots declared an in-flight emergency, requesting an immediate reversal of course and clearance to land at the nearest available facility on Portuguese soil. Flight tracking records confirmed that the widebody jet turned back from its oceanic vector toward the northern coast of Portugal.
Airport emergency mobilization
Civil protection authorities activated a level 2 emergency plan, based on a national scale of 1 to 3, to prepare for the incoming aircraft.
