Shooting in Lyon suburb of Décines-Charpieu leaves one dead and one injured
A Friday evening shooting in the Lyon suburb of Décines-Charpieu left one man dead and another critically wounded in the abdomen, prompting authorities to deploy CRS riot police to secure the area.
Fatal shooting in Décines-Charpieu
A deadly shooting occurred in the early evening on Friday, 28 August 2026, in Décines-Charpieu, a suburban municipality situated on the eastern outskirts of Lyon. Gunfire broke out at approximately 19:30 local time in the Sully district, a densely populated working-class residential neighborhood. The location of the attack sits in close physical proximity to Groupama Stadium, the sports venue where French football club Olympique Lyonnais plays its home matches. One man was struck by gunfire and died directly at the scene before paramedics could provide life-saving treatment. A second victim was shot in the abdomen and was rushed to a nearby medical facility by emergency rescue personnel in serious condition.
Riot police deployed and judicial inquiry opened
The prefecture of the Rhône department officially announced the casualties shortly after the incident unfolded, confirming initial information reported by the regional news website LyonMag. Following the violence, Étienne Guyot, the prefect of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, ordered an immediate deployment of CRS riot police units to the Sully neighborhood to secure the area and protect residents. The homicide investigation was formally transferred to the regional judicial police. A security source urged public and media caution regarding the motives of the shooting, emphasizing that the exact circumstances and the identity of those responsible remain unknown.

Fatal May apartment fire in the same district
The Friday evening shooting occurred in the same residential neighborhood that was struck by a fatal arson attack on 11 May 2026. During that incident, an intentional fire consumed parts of a local apartment building and claimed the lives of three individuals. Emergency responders found two of the victims, a 28-year-old male tenant and his 61-year-old aunt, deceased inside their top-floor residence. A third victim, another 28-year-old man, died after leaping from a window in an attempt to escape the smoke and flames inside the burning structure.
Criminal history and drug trafficking inquiries
Two weeks after the May apartment fire, French police arrested three teenage suspects aged 16, 17, and 18. Judicial magistrates formally indicted all three youths on charges of starting multiple fires resulting in three deaths, as well as charges of criminal conspiracy with intent to commit a crime. Judicial investigators indicated that score-settling related to illicit narcotics trafficking constituted a serious investigative lead in that fatal fire. Local law enforcement had already documented several suspected criminal fire starts and reports of gunfire along that exact same street starting in late April.
