The deceased victim was identified as 36-year-old Giuseppe Scorza, who succumbed to his wounds immediately at the scene. The second man, Renato Elia, sustained serious gunshot injuries during the confrontation and was transported for medical treatment. Officers from the Compagnia di Cassano allo Ionio were deployed to the location shortly after the gunfire was reported.
Attack on environmental services business
The attack unfolded between 5:30 and 5:38 in the morning within the offices of an environmental services management firm owned and operated by Elia. The business premises are located near Via Fiume in the central district of Lauropoli. According to early reconstructions, one or more armed attackers approached the office and opened fire, discharging multiple gunshots at both occupants. Scorza was hit directly and died on the spot. Elia managed to break away from the office, running outside to find shelter inside a nearby bar and commercial establishment to escape the assailants. Detectives are reviewing physical evidence recovered from the office on Via Fiume, including spent bullet casings, to establish the number of weapons deployed during the assault. Prior 2022 double murder of Scorza's parents
Giuseppe Scorza was the son of Maurizio Scorza, who was killed alongside his wife in an unsolved double homicide on 4 April 2022. The elder Scorza, who was 57 years old at the time of his death, was known to law enforcement agencies for drug-related offenses. He was assassinated together with his 38-year-old wife, Hanane Saadi, a Tunisian citizen, by perpetrators using 9mm caliber firearms. The victims of the 2022 killing were discovered abandoned in a rural area identified as Gammellona, situated in the nearby municipal territory of Castrovillari. Police discovered Maurizio Scorza's body concealed inside the trunk of his Mercedes vehicle, while Saadi's body was left in the front passenger seat.
