Barcelona's Frenkie de Jong out for weeks with torn knee ligament, avoids surgery for now
The Barcelona midfielder sustained a medial collateral ligament tear during the World Cup and will miss the start of the LaLiga season, but surgery is not required for now.
Injury confirmed
Barcelona confirmed on Thursday that midfielder Frenkie de Jong has torn the medial collateral ligament in his right knee. The 29-year-old Dutch international sustained the injury during the World Cup and will miss the start of the 2026-27 season. The club's medical statement said De Jong will "continue to receive treatment and be monitored by medical staff, pending his recovery over the coming weeks." No surgery is required at this stage, and the player will follow a conservative treatment plan.
World Cup ordeal
De Jong played all four of the Netherlands' matches at the tournament with a heavy bandage on his knee. He first felt pain during the second group game against Sweden and was infiltrated for the later matches. He played 73 minutes against Tunisia and 110 minutes in the round-of-32 loss to Morocco, where he limped off before the penalty shootout. Netherlands team doctors initially told him the injury was minor and would not worsen if he continued playing.
- De Jong begins feeling knee pain, plays with bandage.
- Plays 73 minutes with infiltrations and heavy bandage.
- Plays 110 minutes, limps off; Netherlands eliminated on penalties.
- Returns early to Barcelona for medical tests despite vacation.
- Barcelona confirms torn MCL; De Jong says no surgery needed.
De Jong hits back at speculation
In an Instagram post, De Jong addressed what he called "false reports" questioning his commitment to Barcelona. He said the injury was more serious than first diagnosed.
The injury was more serious than initially determined. Thankfully, at this stage there is no need for surgery, and I am now fully focused on my recovery.
He added that playing through pain is something he has done throughout his career to help his team. De Jong also expressed frustration with the speculation.
It's difficult for me to see people questioning my relationship and commitment to the club because of false reports. Football is everything to me, and I have always given everything I have for FC Barcelona and my country.
Blow for Barcelona's season start
Barcelona begin their LaLiga title defence away to Elche on 23 August, and De Jong will not be available. The club has not specified a return date, but internal estimates reported by Spanish media range from several weeks to four months. If the longer timeline holds, he could be out until mid-November. Head coach Hansi Flick will have to reshuffle his midfield, with Pedri, Gavi, Fermín López, Dani Olmo, Marc Bernal, and others available. De Jong missed 16 games last season through injury and illness, and his absence early in the campaign adds to a pattern of fitness setbacks.
Recovery outlook
The medial collateral ligament can often heal without surgery, and De Jong will undergo biological treatment, possibly including platelet-rich plasma injections, to promote healing. The club has not ruled out an operation if conservative treatment fails. De Jong said he is "fully focused on my recovery and returning to the pitch as soon as possible." His last two seasons have been disrupted by ankle and muscular problems, and this latest injury raises further questions about his durability as he enters his eighth year at the club.
