Italian Inquiry Reconstructs David Rossi Death as Murder by Multiple Attackers

Forensic simulations at Foro Italico

On 28 September 2026, forensic specialists and Carabinieri investigators from the RIS unit carried out biomechanical simulations at the University of Rome Foro Italico gym. The investigation, commissioned by the Italian parliamentary inquiry into the death of David Rossi, reconstructed the physical space of his office at Rocca Salimbeni in Siena. Technicians built a replica of the office window, complete with surrounding desks and chairs, with support from the national fire department. A Carabinieri athlete sharing the same physical build as the former bank communications chief acted out the victim's potential defensive movements. The testing protocol comprised at least ten simulation runs evaluating four distinct exit maneuvers across scenarios with one, two, and three assailants under both conscious and unconscious conditions.

Conclusions of the medical experts

Medical consultant Robbi Manghi and orthopedic specialist Marco Nigrisoli concluded that the evidence points to homicide rather than suicide. According to their initial assessment, Rossi was conscious and actively attempted to defend himself during a violent and rapid assault inside his office. Manghi explained that because the 51-year-old executive was in good physical shape, a single attacker could not easily overcome him in a physical confrontation. The experts determined that at least two or three large assailants overpowered Rossi, forced him through the window, and held him suspended over the drop before their grip failed.

The suicidal decision and movement are excluded. There was a violent assault and it was hardly a single person because David Rossi was conscious, he was a fit young man.

Parliamentary commission findings

Gianluca Vinci, president of the parliamentary commission of inquiry, attended the testing session and stated that the investigation is closing in on the responsible parties. Vinci explained that Rossi was projected outside the window and held suspended rather than being immediately thrown down by a killer. The inquiry is examining video footage from the 6 March 2013 incident at 19:43, including the airborne trajectory and shadow of Rossi's watch strap as he fell facing the wall with his arms raised. Investigators are also reviewing potential financial extortion motives linked to 50,000 euros in annual sponsorship funds managed directly by Rossi's communications office at Monte dei Paschi di Siena.

It was not a suicide, but a homicide. We have identified in part the motivations. It involves a person projected out of the window, held hanging, and not a killer who directly defenestrated him.

Forensic background and upcoming hearings

The physical simulations build upon earlier specialized trauma reports submitted to the commission. A previous analysis of Rossi's facial and cranial injuries determined they were caused by third parties pressing his head against the window frame or safety bar rather than impact with the ground. Separate medical reviews of wrist trauma similarly confirmed that Rossi had been held by his arms outside the building prior to the fall. While the complete technical conclusions from the Rome simulations will take at least one month to finalize, the commission will continue its work immediately.
