On Tuesday, 8 September 2026, Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz presented their latest collaborative film, Bunker, at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival. Directed and written by French playwright Florian Zeller, the film competes in the official competition for the Golden Lion. The screening marks another joint project for the Spanish actors, who married in 2010 and have shared credits across roughly ten productions since 1992. Co-stars Paul Dano, Stephen Graham, and Patrick Schwarzenegger joined the couple and director during the Lido press conference. Zeller structured the project specifically for Bardem and Cruz, drawing inspiration from Stanley Kubrick's 1999 relationship feature Eyes Wide Shut.

Narrative and social themes

The plot centers on Miguel, played by Bardem, a prominent Spanish architect residing in London with his wife Sofia, portrayed by Cruz, who works as a foreign literature editor. Their seventeen-year marriage faces growing friction when a technology billionaire, played by Dano, hires Miguel to construct a luxury survival shelter in Hawaii. Sofia opposes the commission, viewing the project as complicity in the paranoia of the ultra-wealthy. The tension is mirrored locally by a dispute with their neighbor, played by Graham, over a window built into a shared wall. Zeller framed the script as an examination of economic inequality, social disconnection, and the metaphorical shelters individuals build around themselves.

“We are increasingly used as puppets and at the same time, it is becoming more obvious. I think we can count on the fingers of two hands those who make the biggest decisions, and sometimes one hand would be enough for us.”

Separation of craft and marriage

Addressing reporters in Venice, Cruz criticized technology leaders who eliminate employment while dismissing public impact, arguing that excessive idle time without purpose fosters deep depression. Both performers emphasized that their real marital dynamic does not mirror the strained relationship seen on screen. Cruz explained that working under Zeller provided clear boundaries, noting that they deliberately limit their joint screen appearances to roughly once every five years. Bardem addressed Spain's preliminary Oscar shortlist, joking that their household avoids discussing the contenders because he stars in Rodrigo Sorogoyen's El ser querido while Cruz appears in Los Javis's La bola negra.

Festival presence and screen history

Both actors have a long history at the Venice Film Festival. Cruz won the Volpi Cup for Best Actress in 2021 for Pedro Almodóvar's Madres paralelas, while Bardem earned the Volpi Cup for Best Actor twice, first in 2000 for Before Night Falls and again in 2004 for The Sea Inside. The pair previously brought Fernando León de Aranoa's Loving Pablo to the festival in 2017. Their on-screen partnership began with Bigas Luna's Jamón, jamón in 1992, followed by collaborations such as Woody Allen's Vicky Cristina Barcelona in 2008 and Asghar Farhadi's Todos lo saben in 2018. The Golden Lion awards for the 83rd edition will be decided by the jury led by Maggie Gyllenhaal.
