Greek police arrest two in Crete after Romanian woman reports trafficking ring
Authorities in Heraklion arrested two men and are searching for two others after a 28-year-old Romanian woman reported being forced into prostitution across hotels in Crete.
Complaint and allegations
In late September 2026, Greek police in Heraklion, Crete, opened an investigation into human trafficking, domestic violence, and sexual abuse after a 28-year-old Romanian woman sought protection at a regional police station. The woman, who had been staying at a hotel west of Heraklion, reported that her Romanian partner, aged 31 or 32, held her against her will and forced her into prostitution from early 2025 through August 2026. Her testimony detailed regular physical beatings, non-consensual sexual acts, and the seizure of her earnings from sexual services provided across multiple hotels in Crete and abroad. Following her formal statement on 30 September 2026, police collaborated with the Association of Members of Women's Associations to move her into safe accommodation. The case file lodged by authorities includes charges of human trafficking, pimping, domestic rape, bodily harm, threats, and unlawful appropriation of property.
Surrender and the dispute over identity documents
The inquiry expanded into alleged cross-border trafficking after the victim reported that her partner had confiscated her national identity card. On the morning of 29 September 2026, the partner contacted her twice by telephone to issue threats and confirm that he held her official papers. After police placed him under surveillance, the 31- or 32-year-old suspect surrendered at the Heraklion Crime Investigation Sub-Directorate at 21:00 on 30 September 2026, handing over the victim's card. During interrogation, he claimed that he had arranged the woman's journey to Greece through a 48-year-old Romanian transport operator who runs bus routes between Romania, Greece, and other countries. The suspect alleged that the driver withheld the card as security for unpaid travel fees, and that he had paid 250 euros to the driver's mother to recover it while leaving his own identity card as temporary collateral.
- Partner issues telephone threats and claims possession of victim's identity card
- Partner surrenders at Heraklion police sub-directorate and returns identity card
- Police confirm two arrests and continue search for two Romanian transport suspects
Residential search and initial arrests
Following the partner's interrogation, Hellenic Police officers executed a search warrant at the Heraklion residence of the transport operator's 70-year-old mother and her 72- or 73-year-old husband in the presence of a judicial official. Inside the property, investigators recovered the partner's identity card, two mobile phones, written notes, personal documents, and 120 euros wrapped in paper. Officers arrested the partner on charges of pimping, domestic violence, and issuing threats, along with the 72- or 73-year-old husband, who was the only resident present during the search. The 48-year-old transport company owner and his 70-year-old mother were absent from the premises and remain subjects of an active police search.
Investigation into wider trafficking operations
The Heraklion Crime Investigation Sub-Directorate is examining whether the incident is part of a broader network trafficking women from Romania to Greece. Police are scrutinizing seized financial notes, communication records, and transport schedules to establish whether commercial bus services were systematically used to transfer victims into bonded labor. Investigators are working to identify potential additional victims who may have been held in private residences or local hotels under similar debt arrangements. Judicial authorities in Crete are progressing the legal case against all four named individuals as law enforcement coordinates efforts to locate the two missing suspects.
