Ciarán Frawley scores twice on debut as Connacht edge Benetton 22-19 in Treviso
Ciarán Frawley scored a 77th-minute try to secure a 22-19 bonus-point victory for Connacht against Benetton in Treviso, giving Stuart Lancaster his first win of the campaign.
First-half exchange
Connacht arrived at the Stadio Comunale di Monigo in Treviso seeking their first points of the United Rugby Championship campaign following an opening-round 29-15 home loss to the Stormers. Playing in 19-degree evening conditions before a near-capacity crowd, the visitors opened the scoring five minutes in after Mack Hansen took a quick lineout throw inside his own 22. Cathal Forde and Sean Jansen carried forward before captain Cian Prendergast evaded tackles from Jacob Umaga and Onisi Ratave to score. Benetton answered through hooker Bautista Bernasconi from a lineout maul, but Connacht responded in the 17th minute when Ciarán Frawley delivered a no-look pass to Francois van Wyk, allowing Sean O'Brien to cross. Although full-back Sam Gilbert missed his first two conversions, Connacht entered the break with a 17-12 lead after Leonardo Marin scored for Benetton on 35 minutes and Frawley exploited a dummy run from hooker Matthew Victory to touch down two minutes later.

Second-half pressure and defensive stand
Benetton, coached by Wayne Pivac, took control of the second half by applying sustained pressure through their forward pack and scrum. Connacht lost tighthead prop Finlay Bealham to a yellow card for a high tackle shortly before the interval. Just as the sin-bin period concluded in the 51st minute, Bernasconi drove over for his second try from a close-range maul, and Umaga added the conversion to give the Italian hosts a 19-17 advantage. The Italian side established heavy territorial control, driving the penalty count to 11-2 by the 64th minute and 14-3 by full-time. Connacht survived a six-minute sequence that included five scrums directly in front of their try line while operating with approximately 40% total possession across the contest.

Late winner and post-match reaction
Connacht broke the siege in the 77th minute when Sam Gilbert, Shane Jennings, and Eoin de Buitlear linked along the backline, feeding Frawley in space on the left wing to seal a 22-19 bonus-point victory. Head coach Stuart Lancaster commended the summer signing, who arrived from Leinster and celebrated with a capping ceremony in the dressing room after the final whistle. Lancaster noted that he had coached Frawley since the player was 18 years old.
The way he led the team, not just on the field but off the field, in the meetings, in the walkthrough, everything that he's done has been class really. He's bought into living across in Galway so he's loving it over here.
Lancaster acknowledged that while the squad showed resilience under heavy scrum pressure and away-ground conditions, significant work remained ahead of their next fixture against Glasgow.
I'm very pleased we won, because I think we had about 40% possession. The penalty count must have been, I don't know, 13, 14 to 3 maybe it felt like. So to come here and win it was a great mindset from the players. But obviously a lot to do to improve for next week, for sure.
