Comic Con Malaga opens second European edition with expanded venue and 150 guests
The second Spanish edition of San Diego Comic Con began on Thursday at the Palacio de Ferias in Malaga, featuring a 90,000 square meter layout designed to prevent crowd bottlenecks.
Venue expansion and crowd management reforms
The second Spanish edition of San Diego Comic Con opened on Thursday at the Palacio de Ferias y Congresos de Malaga, operating without the extensive entry queues that disrupted its inaugural 2025 gathering. Organizers enlarged the convention venue to 90,000 square meters, an increase of 10% compared to the prior year. To avoid previous bottlenecks, event coordinators doubled the dedicated exhibitor floor space across both indoor and outdoor sectors while dispersing high-traffic attractions across separate zones. Early arrivals in costume paid 1.20 euros for parking before crossing toward the venue gates alongside characters dressed as Wolverines and Jedis. Up to 15,000 visitors are expected to enter the complex each day, accompanied by 3,000 on-site staff members and event workers. Fernando Piquer, appointed as the event's new director, established the operational overhaul to address past attendee grievances directly.
Piquer described the organizational mission while supervising final adjustments across the pavilion floor.
We are not a comic fair or a film festival: we are entertainment.

Celebrity appearances and restructured merchandise sales
The four-day convention runs until Sunday and hosts roughly 150 invited creators, actors, illustrators, and animators who will present over 300 hours of program content. Confirmed celebrity participants include Karl Urban and Aya Cash from the series The Boys, alongside Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, Iñaki Godoy, and Christopher Lambert. Morning attendees heard the Jurassic Park theme over facility loudspeakers as autograph and photo queues opened. Organizers also revised merchandise sales by creating a raffle system for exclusive Funko Pop figures, including special editions of Spider-Man, Chainsaw Man character Pochita, and Friday the 13th character Jason. In the 2025 edition, unmanaged rushes for collectibles caused severe delays, prompting organizers to shift to the lottery-based allocation system. Content creator Eli Paredes from Barcelona was the first attendee to reach the specialized merchandise desk on Thursday morning.
Paredes reflected on the improved site navigation while attending in a Barnacle Boy costume from SpongeBob SquarePants.
It is much better organized. I think we are going to enjoy these four days very much.
Cosplay displays and the convention's historical evolution
Hundreds of cosplayers arrived from across Spain in elaborate costumes, depicting characters such as Darth Vader, Boba Fett, Gandalf, and One Piece figures Zoro and Perona. Attendees including Jesus, a 42-year-old visitor from Ciudad Real dressed as Homelander alongside his wife as Starlight, reported that controlled ticketing and crowd caps created a manageable environment. Paredes noted plans to wear costumes representing Guardians of the Galaxy, The Big Bang Theory, and hobbits across subsequent days. The Spanish gathering continues a convention format that began in the mid-1960s with the Detroit Triple Fan Fair before collector Shel Dorf relocated to California in 1969. Dorf partnered with Richard Alf, Mike Towry, Ken Krueger, and Barry Alfonso to establish the San Diego gathering as a local event. That project expanded after comic artist Jack Kirby joined, developing the multi-genre convention structure that now operates in Spain.
