Clearlake Capital takes full control of Chelsea as Todd Boehly and Mark Walter sell stakes

Clearlake Capital Group has agreed to buy out co-owners Todd Boehly and Mark Walter in a deal reported at £950 million, securing full control of Chelsea Football Club as Boehly steps down as chairman.

Buyout terms and governance shift

Clearlake Capital Group agreed to acquire the minority ownership stakes held by Todd Boehly and Mark Walter, giving the private equity firm full control of Chelsea Football Club. Boehly will step down from his position as club chairman after more than four years in the role. Under the agreement, Boehly and Walter will receive approximately £950 million ($1.27 billion) in cash. The transaction values the Premier League club at around £5 billion including debt, according to figures reported by the Financial Times. Boehly commented on the conclusion of his term at Stamford Bridge in an official statement.

I have valued my partnership with Clearlake and the wider ownership group, and the collective decisions and investment we have made to support the immediate and long-term success of the Club.

— Todd Boehly

Ownership structure and BlueCo assets

Prior to the transaction, Clearlake held 61.5% of the club, while Boehly, Walter, and Swiss investor Hansjörg Wyss each controlled 12.8% stakes. In its official announcement, the club stated that Wyss will remain an important stakeholder and partner within the ownership group, teaming up with Clearlake co-founders Behdad Eghbali and Jose E. Feliciano. However, BBC reporting stated that Wyss also sold his holding. The transfer of control extends across the multi-club portfolio under the BlueCo consortium, with French Ligue 1 side Racing Club de Strasbourg confirming that Clearlake now holds full capital control of their organisation as well.

Background and multi-club investments

The buyout concludes an ownership arrangement formed in May 2022, when the consortium acquired Chelsea from Roman Abramovich following UK government sanctions. Purchase valuations reported at the time ranged from £2.3 billion to £4.25 billion for the takeover package. The initial purchase agreement included a ten-year restriction preventing owners from selling shares to outside parties. Both Boehly and Walter also maintain investments across American sports teams, including joint ownership of Major League Baseball side the Los Angeles Dodgers. In August 2026, Walter sold his majority stake in the Los Angeles Lakers to Bob Iger and Joshua Kushner at a $12.5 billion valuation.

Sporting performance and operational continuity

The club stated that day-to-day operations, management leadership, and broader sporting strategy will continue unchanged under Clearlake. Significant capital expenditure over the past four years focused on the men's and women's squads, academy development pathways, and the Cobham training complex. The ownership transition follows two years of reported friction between Boehly and Eghbali over sporting direction and substantial player transfer spending. On the pitch, Chelsea sit sixth in the Premier League table after opening the season with two victories, one draw, and one defeat.
