Haaland strikes as Fernandez makes sudden debut

Manchester City maintained a flawless start to their Premier League campaign on Saturday with a 1-0 victory over newly promoted Coventry City at the Etihad Stadium. The decisive moment arrived in the 26th minute when Enzo Fernandez sent a pass into the path of Antoine Semenyo on the right flank. Semenyo delivered a cross over Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth, allowing Erling Haaland to head the ball into the net at the back post. The goal marked Haaland's third league strike in three matches this season and his 300th career goal at club level. The Norwegian forward also became Manchester City's all-time leader in Premier League headed goals with 20. Fernandez started the match unexpectedly after midfielder Nico O'Reilly suffered a back injury during the pre-match warm-up.

Midfield control and attacking pressure

Fernandez completed a British record-equalling £125 million ($169.01 million) transfer from Chelsea on deadline day as part of City's £460 million summer squad overhaul following Pep Guardiola's decade in charge. Operating alongside Elliot Anderson in midfield, the 25-year-old helped City control possession and register 803 completed passes, their highest tally in a single league match since 2023. City created further opportunities to extend their advantage during the first half, including a strike against the post from Rayan Cherki. Fernandez thought he had created a second goal for Haaland in the second half, but the effort was disallowed because the Argentine was in an offside position. Summer signing Iliman Ndiaye also made his debut for the club, starting in attack alongside Haaland, Semenyo, and Cherki.

Coventry resilience and late defensive saves

Frank Lampard's Coventry side arrived without a point or a goal in their return to the top flight after 25 years. Despite having only 22% possession, Coventry created early opportunities after City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma miscontrolled a backpass and had to clear the ball off his goal line. Taiwo Awoniyi and Jack Rudoni missed chances to put the visitors ahead before Haaland's opener. In the closing stages of the second half, Donnarumma produced two crucial stops to deny substitutes Loum Tchaouna and Ellis Simms from finding an equaliser. Manager Enzo Maresca reflected on his team's performance after the final whistle:

First half we could have scored one or two more, but we worked together to win so I am happy. It is difficult against teams in a low block. I felt we dealt very well with that. Not all the performances are going to be nice, you also need ugly moments.
