Greek actor Christos Fragkos dies at 90 after six-decade stage and television career

Greek stage and television actor Christos Fragkos died on 9 September 2026 at the age of 90. The news was made public on the morning of 13 September 2026 by actor Spyros Bibilas through social media, following confirmation from journalist Ioanna Kleftogianni. Bibilas reflected on Fragkos's six decades in Greek theatre, tracing his progression from student productions at the National Theatre to classical drama tours across Greece and abroad. His funeral is scheduled to take place on 14 September 2026 at 18:00 at the Church of Saint Nicholas in his hometown of Spata.

Early life and stage training

Fragkos was born in Spata on 10 July 1936 and studied acting at the Drama School of the National Theatre of Greece. During his studies at the National Theatre, his teachers included Alexis Minotis, Dimitris Rondiris, Thanos Kotsopoulos, and Eleni Chalkousi. His professional stage debut came in 1964 when he joined the company of Dimitris Myrat for the production "Otan oi Atreides" at the Kotopouli Theatre. In 1965, Fragkos began a one-year collaboration with Dimitris Rondiris's Peiraiko Theatro, travelling on international tours across Europe and Latin America. In the summers of 1966 and 1967, running through September, he performed in ancient drama productions with Anna Synodinou's troupe Elliniki Skini during tours of Volos and Thessaloniki.

Artistic partnership and Theatro Vergi

A decisive turning point in his life arrived in the winter season of 1967, when he met actress and theatre manager Elsa Vergi. Their artistic collaboration developed into a marriage that lasted until Vergi died in 1989. In late 1967, Fragkos signed a contract with Theatro Vergi for European tours of "Forms of Ancient Drama", featuring works by Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides. Fragkos returned briefly to Peiraiko Theatro in April 1968 and rejoined Theatro Vergi in April 1969. In May 1969, he signed with the troupe of Kostis Michailidis for a domestic production of "Iphigenia in Aulis", before performing with Nikos Chatziskos's troupe at Theatro Kava in late 1969. Fragkos subsequently served as co-director of Theatro Vergi from 1974 until 1989, and continued leading the company independently as sole director until 1994.

Television roles and educational performances

In parallel with his extensive stage work, Fragkos established a regular presence on Greek television. He appeared in several television series, including "To Ouranio Toxo", "To galazio diamanti", "I exafanisi tou John Avlakioti", "I Apodrasi", and "I Oikogeneia". From 1996 onward, Fragkos resumed his collaboration with Anna Synodinou for several years, participating in stage productions of ancient drama presented free of charge to school students. These educational tours brought classical Greek tragedy to student audiences across the country. His death on 9 September 2026 concludes a career spanning classical tragedy, theatre management, and television acting.
