China postpones Chang'e-7 lunar south pole mission after launch window closes
Chinese space authorities have postponed the Chang'e-7 robotic mission to the lunar south pole from the Wenchang launch site, missing the planned 2026 launch window following weather warnings and a recent rocket anomaly.
Launch window postponed
China has delayed the launch of its robotic lunar probe Chang'e-7 from the Wenchang Space Launch Site on Hainan Island. The mission was scheduled to lift off on a Long March 5 heavy-lift rocket in late August 2026. Chinese space authorities announced on Sunday that the flight could not proceed as scheduled, closing the launch window for the remainder of the year. Officials stated that the delay followed a comprehensive assessment to ensure safety and mission reliability.
The space agency explained the decision in an official release.
The mission does not meet launch conditions and cannot take place during the planned window this year.
Weather conditions and recent rocket anomaly
While Chinese authorities did not provide detailed technical explanations, international mission partners offered additional context on the timing. Thailand's National Astronomical Research Institute (NARIT), which contributed scientific instrumentation, pointed to adverse weather caused by Tropical Storm Narra. The storm hovered off the coast of Hainan and mainland southern China over the weekend. NARIT indicated that the launch schedule would slip by roughly one month.
Technical reviews following a recent launch failure may have also influenced the postponement. Less than two weeks earlier, in early August 2026, a Long March 7A rocket suffered an in-flight anomaly and exploded shortly after lifting off from the same Wenchang spaceport. Ground teams had already rolled the Long March 5 carrying Chang'e-7 out to the launch pad last week. The sudden pause halted final countdown preparations.
Scientific mission at the lunar south pole
The Chang'e-7 spacecraft package comprises an orbiter, a lander, and a rover configured to survey the lunar south pole. Its core objective is to search for water ice inside permanently shadowed craters, where temperatures remain low enough to preserve frozen deposits. The mission also carries international hardware, including Thailand's CE-7 MATCH instrument. Data gathered from these surface and orbital surveys will assess local resources and environmental conditions.

The flight represents the seventh installment of China's lunar exploration program, which began in 2007 with the orbital Chang'e-1 mission. China achieved its first lunar landing with the Yutu rover in 2013 and executed the first landing on the far side of the Moon in 2019. In 2020, China retrieved samples from the lunar surface, followed by the 53-day Chang'e-6 mission in summer 2024, which brought back 1,935.3 grams of material from the far side.
Strategic competition and future lunar timelines
The Chang'e-7 mission is designed to prepare infrastructure for permanent lunar bases. China plans to conduct its first crewed lunar landing before 2030 and intends to construct a lunar habitat on the surface or in orbit by 2031 alongside international partners such as Russia. Identifying harvestable water ice at the south pole is viewed as critical for supporting crew habitats and enabling future deep-space transit to Mars.

The development occurs alongside competing efforts by the United States under NASA's Artemis program. In April 2026, the Artemis 2 crew flew aboard the Orion spacecraft on a test flight beyond the Moon, achieving the greatest distance from Earth reached by humans. NASA has scheduled an Artemis 3 low Earth orbit demonstration for mid-2027 to evaluate commercial lunar landers from SpaceX and Blue Origin, aiming to return astronauts to the lunar surface in 2028.
