A fire broke out late on Friday evening, 11 September 2026, at an elderly care facility in the town of Pitrufquén in southern Chile. According to regional reports from Meganoticias, the blaze started at approximately 22:30 local time. The fire developed rapidly within the residential complex, sending large plumes of smoke into the night air. Images published by the Chilean daily newspaper La Tercera and shared across social networks showed large flames bursting through the roof and engulfing the entire property within minutes.
Multi-agency emergency response
Emergency teams were alerted late in the evening, prompting a response across the southern region. Multiple firefighting units and rescue teams from Pitrufquén and several surrounding municipalities were deployed to the site to combat the blaze. Emergency workers faced extensive flames across the structure while attempting to gain access to the interior rooms. Firefighters were able to rescue ten residents alive from the burning building. The ten rescued survivors were transported to nearby hospitals with various injuries to receive medical care.
