Chicago Fire defeat Western Conference leaders Vancouver Whitecaps 3-1
Goals from Jonathan Bamba, Philip Zinckernagel, and Maren Haile-Selassie secured three points for Chicago Fire at Soldier Field, lifting the club to fourth in the Eastern Conference.
Early lead and first-half pressure
Chicago Fire took control of the match in the opening stages at Soldier Field after an early attempt from Maren Haile-Selassie in the third minute. In the ninth minute, midfielder Anton Saletros delivered a pass out to the left flank for Jonathan Bamba, who cut inside and beat Vancouver goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka with a 20-meter strike inside the post. Gregg Berhalter's side continued to press forward, creating further opportunities through Jack Elliott and Philip Zinckernagel. In the 27th minute, refereeing officials awarded Chicago a penalty following a handball in the box by Mathias Laborda. Zinckernagel took a short two-step run-up but struck the right post, keeping the score at 1-0. Elliott subsequently saw a header bounce off the crossbar, while another looping header was cleared off the goal line by Vancouver forward Brian White.
Second-half exchange and tactical shifts
Vancouver Whitecaps introduced Thomas Mueller at the start of the second half to alter their attacking shape, but Chicago doubled their advantage shortly after the restart. In the 50th minute, a quick combination down the left flank created space for Zinckernagel, who exchanged passes with Haile-Selassie before finishing into the net for 2-0. Vancouver responded past the hour mark, capitalizing on their first shot on target in the 73rd minute. Defender Mathias Laborda connected with a corner kick delivered by Oliver Larraz to beat Chicago goalkeeper Josh Cohen, who started in place of regular goalkeeper Chris Brady while Brady served on the United States bench against Canada.

Late substitution and sealing goal
With the scoreline reduced to 2-1, Berhalter made a double substitution in the 76th minute, sending on Robert Lewandowski alongside Puso Dithejane. Lewandowski had returned early to Chicago after missing Poland's Nations League match against Bosnia and Herzegovina because of yellow card accumulation. The fixture against Vancouver had originally been scheduled for July 16 but was postponed due to poor air quality in Chicago. In the 85th minute, Vancouver defender Sam Adekugbe executed a sliding tackle to deny Lewandowski inside the penalty area after Dithejane found the striker. Three minutes later, Lewandowski was clean through on goal against Takaoka and passed to an unmarked Haile-Selassie, who scored into the empty net for 3-1.
Playoff positioning in both conferences
The result marked a second consecutive victory for Chicago Fire following their 1-0 win over Charlotte FC. Chicago advanced to fourth place in the Eastern Conference standings with 45 points, placing them one point behind both New England Revolution and Inter Miami. Vancouver Whitecaps remained in first place in the Western Conference with 50 points despite the defeat. With seven matches remaining in the regular season, the top seven teams in each conference secure direct entry into the playoff first round, while eighth and ninth place enter a single-match play-in round.
