Chicago Fire defeat Orlando City 2-1 after lightning delay behind Robert Lewandowski penalty
Robert Lewandowski converted a 69th-minute penalty to earn Chicago Fire a 2-1 away victory over Orlando City SC following a two-hour weather suspension.
Early breakthrough and MLS debut
Gregg Berhalter named two Polish players in the Chicago Fire starting lineup for the round 21 fixture at Inter&Co Stadium in Orlando, deploying forward Robert Lewandowski alongside midfielder David Poreba. The 23-year-old Poreba, born in Chicago and previously playing in the reserve league after a stint at Stal Mielec, made his MLS debut. Chicago opened the scoring in the fourth minute following an Orlando City defensive turnover. Lewandowski initially attempted to head down a long pass from the left flank, and after Orlando failed to clear the loose ball, Poreba collected possession. Poreba passed directly to Puso Dithejane, who placed a shot into the net to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage. Orlando pushed forward to respond, but Chicago goalkeeper Chris Brady blocked an effort from Justin Ellis in the 31st minute and stopped a subsequent shot from Antoine Griezmann.
Lightning stoppage at Inter&Co Stadium
Chicago created another chance in the 37th minute when Lewandowski played a through ball to Dithejane, whose long-range effort was saved by Orlando goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau. The match was halted in the 43rd minute when referee Rosendo Mendoza ordered both teams off the pitch due to severe weather. Lightning strikes near Inter&Co Stadium required both squads and spectators to seek shelter under stadium safety protocols. The weather delay lasted nearly two hours before conditions cleared sufficiently for the match to restart at 04:11 Polish time. Weather disruptions had previously affected Chicago earlier in the season, when Canadian wildfire smoke caused the postponement of a fixture against the Vancouver Whitecaps. Both sides completed the remaining minutes of the first half without further score before entering the second half.
Second-half goals and decisive penalty
Orlando City equalized seven minutes after the restart through an assist from Antoine Griezmann. The French forward, who signed with Orlando after leaving Atletico Madrid, delivered a corner kick into the penalty area in the 52nd minute. Defender David Brekalo connected with the cross and scored past Brady to make the score 1-1. Chicago restored their lead in the 69th minute after Lewandowski controlled a pass in the box and drew a foul from Orlando defender Robin Jansson. Mendoza awarded a penalty, which Lewandowski converted by sending Crepeau to the opposite side and placing his shot into the side netting. The strike was Lewandowski's third MLS goal and his fourth in eight appearances across all competitions for Chicago.
