Welbeck opens account at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea secured a 2-0 victory against League One side Luton Town on Thursday in Xabi Alonso's first competitive home fixture as manager. The 35-year-old summer signing Danny Welbeck broke the deadlock five minutes into the second half, heading in a delivery from right-back Malo Gusto after Estevao Willian initiated the move down the wing. Jack Wilshere's visiting side defended with discipline throughout the opening 45 minutes, supported by goalkeeper Josh Keeley, who produced an 11th-minute double save against Cole Palmer and pushed away a free-kick from Chelsea captain Reece James. Goalkeeper Robert Sanchez was benched after committing two errors in Monday's 3-2 league win over Fulham, occurring as Chelsea agreed terms to sign Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez. Sealing progression to the third round

Luton midfielder Kasey Palmer shot wide against his former club before Chelsea doubled their lead in the 79th minute. Estevao attacked into the penalty box and delivered a low ball that deflected into the net off Luton defender Odoffin for an own goal. Keeley made late saves against Palmer and Joao Pedro, while substitute Jamie Gittens struck the post in stoppage time. Chelsea, who do not play in European competition this season, advanced to host Premier League side Leeds United at Stamford Bridge during the week of 7 September.

Fulham progress under Arbeloa

At Craven Cottage, Fulham recorded a 3-0 victory against League One side AFC Wimbledon, securing manager Alvaro Arbeloa his first win at the helm. Arbeloa made 10 changes to the team that lost to Chelsea on Monday, retaining only Oscar Bobb while handing a first start to midfielder Shea Charles. Emile Smith Rowe opened the scoring in the 37th minute with a close-range header from Kenny Tete's deflected cross. Striker Rodrigo Muniz doubled the lead before the interval with another header from a Tete delivery, scoring his first goal in more than 12 months after missing four months of the previous campaign with injury. Summer arrival Gonzalo Garcia completed the scoreline in the 94th minute by rounding goalkeeper Nathan Bishop on a counter-attack, setting up a third-round tie against West Ham United.
