Charleroi beats Cercle Brugge 3-2 to take second place in Pro League

Dominant opening half-hour

Sporting de Charleroi recorded a 3-2 home victory against Cercle Brugge at the Mambourg stadium, securing their sixth win in seven matches in the league campaign. Charleroi manager Mario Kohnen opted to field the exact same starting eleven for the third consecutive match, maintaining squad stability following the injury suffered by Antoine Bernier. During pre-match preparations on the eve of the game, Kohnen had instructed his squad to prepare for Cercle's aggressive high pressing. Instead, Charleroi took control of the contest from kickoff, applying intense pressure that suffocated the visiting side throughout the opening thirty minutes of the match.

Mbemba and Scheidler establish early cushion

Charleroi converted their early territorial advantage into the opening goal in the 15th minute of play. Patrick Pflücke delivered a targeted ball into the penalty box toward Norwegian attacker Jakob Napoleon Romsaas. Romsaas provided a subtle one-touch backheel flick into the path of Freddy Mbemba, who struck without hesitation past the goalkeeper to make it 1-0. A turnover by Mardochee Nzita in Charleroi's half opened space for an immediate counter-attack by the visitors in the 29th minute. As Cercle pushed forward, Charleroi defender Cheikh Keita slipped on the turf in defense, allowing Erick Nunes to sprint clear into the final third. Nunes crossed the ball into the penalty box for Dante Vanzeir, who finished past the goalkeeper to reduce the deficit to 2-1.

Despite allowing Cercle back into contention, Charleroi found a third goal to close out the contest at 3-2 and avoid repeating past struggles against the Bruges outfit. Last February, Cercle had defeated Charleroi 4-3 at the Mambourg stadium, an outcome that ended an eight-match unbeaten run across all competitions under former manager Hans Cornelis and initiated a difficult period for the club. By securing their third goal and defending the lead on Saturday, Kohnen's side preserved their momentum, claiming their sixth victory in seven league outings.

The 3-2 victory lifts Sporting de Charleroi provisionally into second place in the Belgian Pro League standings. That placement remains provisional as the club waits for the results of upcoming weekend matches involving Union Saint-Gilloise and Club Brugge.
