Ceiling collapses in Rome retail store during renovation, four rescued unhurt
Firefighters and specialized search teams evacuated four people without injuries after a ceiling gave way at the North Face shop on Via Cola di Rienzo in Rome.
Ceiling collapse during commercial building renovations
A ceiling collapsed on Monday morning, 7 September 2026, inside a commercial building undergoing renovation on Via Cola di Rienzo in Rome. The structural failure occurred at around 10:30 at number 274, a prominent retail address located in the capital's Prati district near Piazza Risorgimento. The collapse took place directly within the ground-floor retail space occupied by the North Face store. Four people, consisting of two store employees and two customers, were inside the premises when the overhead structure gave way. An emergency call was placed immediately to the single emergency number 112 to request urgent technical and medical assistance.
Emergency deployment and rescue operations
Following the alert, the operational control room of the Rome provincial fire department dispatched two firefighting teams and an aerial ladder truck to the address. Specialist Urban Search and Rescue squads and canine detection units deployed to search the rubble and verify whether additional individuals remained trapped beneath the debris. Emergency medical services from the 118 network arrived with several ambulances alongside a fire official and the shift supervisor. First responders quickly extracted the four occupants from the premises and transferred them outside for on-site medical examinations. Medical personnel confirmed that none of the four rescued individuals suffered injuries during the incident.

Eyewitness accounts from inside the retail space
Employees inside the retail outlet reported that the structural collapse happened without advance warning, knocking out electricity and filling the interior with thick dust. Raffaele Prete, an employee stationed in the rear section of the North Face store, moved toward the entrance immediately after hearing the structural failure.
We heard a very loud noise. I was in the back of the shop, so I did not see. I only heard the loud noise. I went to the front part of the shop and we saw that the ceiling had collapsed.
The resulting electrical failure left the store in total darkness as airborne debris rapidly spread through the room.
At that moment nothing could be understood because all the lights went out and you could only see smoke coming towards us. In fact I told both my colleague and the customers to take shirts and put them over their noses to breathe, because it was unbreathable.
Prete directed the customers and his coworker to use clothing to protect their airways until emergency teams arrived to guide them safely out into the street.
Structural evaluations and official investigations
State police officers from the local Prati district cordoned off the surrounding shopping street to allow emergency crews to operate safely around the building. Fire department technicians began comprehensive structural stability checks to evaluate the condition of upper floors and adjacent retail units. Authorities formally notified the Rome public prosecutor's office about the collapse to initiate legal and technical reviews of the ongoing renovation project. Police investigators remain on site to examine construction records and determine the technical causes of the failure. Specialist rescue teams concluded search operations after confirming that no further individuals were present under the debris.
