Today’s Brief

Kyiv, Ceuta and Europe’s dry summer

Russia hits Kyiv as Ceuta’s toll reaches 67 and Europe’s rivers fall

The evening’s pressure points are physical. Ukraine’s air defences missed most ballistic missiles in a large Russian barrage. At Europe’s southern border, the human toll from Ceuta’s mass crossing reached 67. Drought is now constraining both electricity generation and Rhine shipping.

Agricultural fire in Talavera triggers confinement orders and A-2 motorway closure

An agricultural fire that broke out in unharvested cereal fields near Talavera (Lleida) on Wednesday evening led to ES-Alert confinement orders for the settlements of Pallerols and Ribera d'Ondara and the shutdown of the A-2 motorway.

The fire and confinement

The fire was first reported to Bombers de la Generalitat shortly after 18:15 on Wednesday, 17 June 2026. Some sources list the official start time as 18:22. The blaze broke out in Talavera, a municipality in the Segarra comarca of Lleida province, in an area of unharvested cereal fields. Driven by a south-southeasterly thermal wind known as the marinada, the flames spread rapidly. At approximately 18:30, Protecció Civil activated the ES-Alert cell‑broadcast system, sending emergency messages to mobile phones in the settlements of Pallerols (a nucleus of Talavera) and the neighboring municipality of Ribera d'Ondara. The alert instructed residents to shelter in place, close all doors and windows to avoid toxic smoke, and to avoid any movement on local roads. Protecció Civil also published the confinement order on the social media platform 'X'.

Firefighting deployment

The Generalitat's fire service initially dispatched 24 ground crews and 5 aircraft. As the fire grew, the response was reinforced to 33 ground units and 8 aerial means, bringing the total number of firefighters on site to about 150. On the left flank and the tail, heavy earth‑moving machinery is being used to cut firebreaks and contain the spread. On the right flank and at the head, where the wind is most intense, aircraft are making water and retardant drops. Authorities are working to hold the fire within a perimeter before nightfall, after which the air units will be forced to stand down.

Traffic disruption

To support the emergency, the Servei Català de Trànsit closed the A-2 motorway between Jorba (Anoia) and Cervera (Segarra) in both directions. Barcelona‑bound traffic is being diverted at Cervera onto the C‑25 (Eix Transversal). Drivers heading towards Lleida are redirected at Jorba onto the C‑1412a to link up with the same transversal road. Trànsit recommends the AP‑2 toll motorway as the main alternative for long‑distance travel.

Nightfall and outlook

As darkness falls, ground crews are accelerating direct attack operations to contain the fire before aerial support is suspended for the night. No injuries have been reported, and emergency services maintain a secured perimeter. The operation continues through the evening.
