Spanish business executive and former Iberia head Carlos Espinosa de los Monteros dies at 82

Public administration and airline turnaround

Carlos Espinosa de los Monteros y Bernaldo de Quirós, the fourth Marquis of Valtierra, died on Saturday, 29 August 2026 in Madrid at the age of 82 following a short illness. Born in the Spanish capital on 18 March 1944, he earned degrees in law from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid in 1965 and in business administration from ICADE in 1966, followed by a master's in business administration from Northwestern University in 1967. In 1969, he gained admission to the state corps of commercial economists and trade experts, starting his career at the Ministry of Commerce. He subsequently served as Spain's commercial counselor in Chicago between 1972 and 1976 before becoming commercial director and later vice president of the Instituto Nacional de Industria (INI) through 1982.

Between 1982 and 1985, he led state airline Iberia and its subsidiary Aviaco through a financial restructuring plan. The program eliminated annual losses of 30,000 million pesetas (180 million euros), bringing the carrier to financial balance within three years. During this tenure, he also served on the executive committee of the International Air Transport Association (IATA). His time at the flag carrier ended after labor disputes with pilot union Sepla, after which he increasingly focused on private corporate management.

Corporate leadership and international diplomacy

In 1988, Espinosa de los Monteros moved to the private sector as chairman and chief executive officer of Mercedes-Benz España, leading the automaker's domestic operations until 2009. During his 21-year tenure, he supervised the complete overhaul of the assembly plant in Vitoria with an investment exceeding 1,000 million euros. His automotive roles expanded to the presidency of DaimlerChrysler AG in 2004, the head of Spanish industry body ANFAC, and the leadership of the International Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (OICA).

Between 1997 and 2018, he served as non-executive vice president and board director at Inditex, advising the retail group prior to its initial public offering and through its international expansion. He held additional board and executive roles at sherry producer González Byass, infrastructure company Acciona, elevator manufacturer Schindler, and workplace mutual insurer Fraternidad-Muprespa. In the 1990s, he headed the business think tank Círculo de Empresarios. From 12 July 2012 until 13 October 2018, he returned to public service as the Spanish government's first High Commissioner for Marca España, an unpaid pro bono post holding the rank of Secretary of State dedicated to coordinating the country's global reputation.

Family and condolences

Espinosa de los Monteros inherited the title of Marquis of Valtierra from his father, Francisco Javier Espinosa de los Monteros, in 1985. He married María Eugenia de Simón y Vallarino in 1970, with whom he had five children, including former Vox politician Iván Espinosa de los Monteros, and 19 grandchildren. Following the announcement of his death, political figures and business associations expressed condolences. Former Vox secretary general Javier Ortega Smith offered praise for his professional and personal career.
