
Airlink defends Cape Town stadium flyby after jets pass 12 metres above rugby crowd
South African carrier Airlink defended a low-altitude pass by two Embraer jets over Cape Town's DHL Stadium before a test match between South Africa and New Zealand, after flight tracking data recorded the lead jet flying 12 to 14 metres above the venue roof.
Low-altitude pass at DHL Stadium
Two commercial passenger jets operated by South African carrier Airlink performed a low-level flyby over DHL Stadium in Cape Town on 29 August 2026, moments before kickoff in the second test match between South Africa and New Zealand. The aircraft, an Embraer E190 painted green for the Springboks and an Embraer E195 painted black for the All Blacks, flew over the venue as pyrotechnic flares and pink smoke were released from the roof structure. Between 50,000 and 60,000 spectators attended the fixture, which formed part of the Rugby's Greatest Rivalry series. Neither aircraft carried passengers during the aerial demonstration.
Flight telemetry and regulatory approvals
Flight tracking data compiled by Flightradar24 indicated that the aircraft operated at an altitude between 205 and 210 feet above sea level, equivalent to 62 to 64 metres. Given the 50-metre height of DHL Stadium, the lead aircraft cleared the roof by 12 to 14 metres, or 41 to 46 feet. The second jet followed close behind, navigating through the cloud of smoke generated by the stadium pyrotechnics at a recorded speed of approximately 150 knots (280 km/h). Airlink stated on 30 August that the maneuver had been coordinated with regulatory bodies, including the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) and Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS).

Industry scrutiny and official defence
Video recordings of the flyby circulated widely across social media networks, leading to public discussions regarding safety margins above a crowded sports venue. Each Embraer jet was crewed by three senior captains assigned to commander, co-pilot, and technical safety officer roles. Airlink confirmed that recorded flight data showed both aircraft remained within established speed and altitude parameters throughout the flight. Chris Martinus, president of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, pointed to the tight clearance margins exhibited by the lead jet during its approach.
Basically, that lead aircraft... was kind of like dodging over the roof and climbing over the one side and dipping below and then climbing over the other side. That was a little bit uncomfortable.
South African Minister of Sport Gayton McKenzie defended the flight crew on social media platform X, praising the execution of the flypast following the match.

The precedent was established ahead of the 1995 Rugby World Cup final between South Africa and New Zealand at Ellis Park in Johannesburg, when a South African Airways Boeing 747 flew over the ground prior to kickoff. Airlink, which operates approximately 70 Embraer passenger jets and holds financial backing from Qatar Airways, maintains official sponsorship ties with the South African national rugby team.
