Stuttgart readies 179th Cannstatter Volksfest with 240 vendors and farm fair

Schedule and opening traditions

The 179th edition of the Cannstatter Volksfest, also known as the Herbst-Wasen, begins on 25 September in Stuttgart and runs for 17 days through 11 October. Commercial stalls, fair rides, and entertainment businesses across the Wasen site open for operation starting at 15:00 on opening day. Stuttgart Lord Mayor Frank Nopper conducts the official keg tapping ceremony at 16:00 to start the festival. The beer tapping is a mandatory signal for the entire venue, as no other festive tent or gastronomic establishment is permitted to dispense beer until the liquid flows from the mayor's barrel. To coordinate the simultaneous service of drinks, the tapping event is broadcast live via video transmission to all other tents across the grounds. Onlookers track the number of wooden hammer strikes delivered by the Christian Democratic Union politician, who successfully opened the festival with two strikes at the previous edition.

Fair hours and visitor management

Following the opening afternoon, the fairgrounds operate on standard weekday hours from Monday through Friday starting at 12:00. Weekend operations on Saturday and Sunday open one hour earlier at 11:00. The grounds close at 23:00 from Sunday through Thursday, while operating hours continue until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. The initial opening Friday provides an exception to standard weekday hours by remaining open for visitors until midnight. Organizers expect high visitor density throughout the 17-day festival, particularly during weekends and on the 3 October public holiday. Festival management notes that crowd concentrations reach their highest levels inside the tents and walkways on Saturdays between 16:00 and 19:00.

Vendors and parallel agricultural exhibition

Approximately 240 showmen, tent hosts, and market merchants participate in this year's festival, welcoming guests to their stalls and dining tents. In the previous year, approximately 4.2 million people visited the Wasen festival site, though total attendance for the current edition remains dependent on weather conditions. This year, the Landwirtschaftliches Hauptfest opens almost concurrently on the Wasen grounds from 27 September to 4 October. Self-described as the largest agricultural trade fair in southern Germany, the event takes place every four years and occupies nearly 130,000 square meters of the site. Because the agricultural exhibition reduces the space available for general festival activities, organizers designate this edition as the small Wasen. The agricultural fair features hundreds of commercial exhibitors, animal exhibition tents holding hundreds of livestock, and a specialised presentation focusing on modern calf rearing practices.

Royal origins in nineteenth-century Baden-Wuerttemberg

The Cannstatter Volksfest ranks as the largest festival in the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg, tracing its history back more than two centuries. King Wilhelm I of Wuerttemberg established the public festival after the region suffered severe crop failures and famine. The monarch introduced the event to bring citizens together on the Cannstatter Wasen following agricultural hardships. The gathering grew from those post-crisis assemblies into an established tradition that continues to draw multi-million crowds to the banks of the Neckar each autumn.
