Canada marks Gordie Howe bridge opening alone after Trump tariff threats scuttle joint ceremony

A one-sided celebration

On Friday, Canadian officials gathered on the Windsor side of the Gordie Howe International Bridge to mark its completion. The planned cross-border ribbon-cutting with US representatives was cancelled. Amid tables of fruit cups, pastries and children playing hockey, attendees wore red and white and were encouraged to show Canadian pride. They were prevented from crossing to the US side of the bridge. Ontario Premier Doug Ford, wearing a red Team Canada jersey with Gordie Howe's number 9, said the bridge was "an example of what we can achieve when our two great countries work together."

Trade war overshadows opening

The ceremony was stripped of its bilateral character after months of escalating trade tensions. US President Donald Trump has threatened 50 percent tariffs on Canadian goods, including a proposal to levy duties for smoke from Canadian wildfires that drifted into the US. Canada sends roughly 70 percent of its exports to the United States. In February, Trump threatened to block the bridge project, citing Canadian provincial bans on US alcohol, dairy tariffs, and Ottawa's trade talks with China.

The bridge and its rival

The $4.7 billion bridge, paid for entirely by Canada, spans 1.5 miles across the Detroit River. Construction began in 2018 and was originally scheduled to open in June 2026. It is designed as a faster, higher-capacity alternative to the privately owned Ambassador Bridge, which has been operated by the Moroun family for decades. In January, Matthew Moroun, a Detroit-based trucking magnate, made a $1 million donation to a Trump-aligned political action committee, according to The New York Times.

Political backdrop

Ford, wearing Howe's number 9, said Ontario would not back down from the US. The bridge's name honours the Hall of Fame hockey player who starred for the Detroit Red Wings, a symbol of cross-border ties. The decision to exclude US officials from the ceremony reflects the depth of the rift. The bridge will open to traffic on Monday, July 27.

Economic stakes

The new crossing is expected to improve efficiency for automakers and other industries that rely on the Windsor-Detroit corridor. The existing Ambassador Bridge handles a large share of US-Canada trade, and the Gordie Howe span offers a publicly owned alternative. With Trump's tariff threats hanging over bilateral commerce, the bridge's opening arrives at a moment of unusual strain between the two allies.
