Pietro Moriconi kills wife and son with hunting rifle in Camaiore, then barricades on roof before arrest
Pietro Moriconi, 63, shot dead his wife Kathy Andreoni, 52, and their 24-year-old son Mirko inside the family home in Pieve di Camaiore on Wednesday afternoon, then climbed onto the roof where police later disarmed him without resistance.
The shooting
On the afternoon of 24 June 2026, Pietro Moriconi took a hunting rifle and fired at his wife Kathy Andreoni and son Mirko inside their home in Vado, a hamlet of Camaiore, in Versilia. The shooting occurred shortly before 3 p.m., in the area of Via della Costa between Pieve and Casoli. Both victims died from gunshot wounds.
The alarm and emergency response
A nephew of the family, after hearing the shots, ran towards the house and discovered the 63-year-old sitting on a small wall, still holding the weapon. The 118 emergency call centre received the alert at 14:32, reporting a shooting in progress in the Pieve area of Camaiore and the presence of an armed person on the roof of the home. Multiple rescue units were dispatched: an ambulance with a nurse from the Misericordia of Camaiore, the Red Cross of Viareggio, the Pegaso 3 air ambulance, a medical car from Viareggio 118, and the carabinieri, with the fire brigade also put on alert.
The arrest
After the emergency call, Moriconi did not flee. Instead, he climbed onto the roof of the house, where he waited until the carabinieri arrived. They surrounded the area, disarmed him, and placed him under arrest without any resistance. Once the scene was secured, medical personnel confirmed the deaths of the 52-year-old woman and the 24-year-old man.

What neighbours said about family tensions
Residents in the neighbourhood reported long-standing family disputes but “nothing that foreshadowed such an ending” (“nulla che lasciasse presagire un epilogo simile”). In recent weeks, several acquaintances described Moriconi as visibly troubled and exasperated by his family members’ behaviour. He had complained openly to some of them about his frustrations.
The investigation
The public prosecutor’s office in Lucca has opened an investigation into the double homicide. Technical examinations of the weapon are to be carried out in the coming hours, and investigators will interview relatives, neighbours, and acquaintances to reconstruct the motive. For now, the immediate words reported by those at the scene are stark.
I got rid of them.
