Italian prosecutors investigate death of worker found on Caivano street
Prosecutors in Italy opened an inquiry after 61-year-old construction worker Salvatore Calignano died following an alleged fall from a warehouse roof and abandonment on a Caivano roadside.
Circumstances of the Caivano discovery
Prosecutors at the Procura di Napoli Nord opened an inquiry after Salvatore Calignano, a 61-year-old construction worker, died on Saturday, 3 October, at the Ospedale del Mare in Naples. Calignano had been admitted to the hospital on Friday, 2 October, after suffering severe polytrauma. Paramedics from the 118 emergency service were dispatched following an emergency call and found him lying near a tree along Via Fossa del Lupo, an isolated road in the municipality of Caivano, near Naples. The emergency services arrived at the location at approximately 15:00. Before losing consciousness during the emergency intervention, Calignano told medical staff that he had suffered injuries in a fall from a ladder.
Roof maintenance and suspected abandonment
According to accounts provided by his wife, Carmela Amura, Calignano had telephoned her around 13:00 on Friday to state that he was carrying out roof maintenance work on a commercial warehouse in Caivano. The tasks involved the installation of an insulating waterproof sheath. Investigators subsequently discovered Calignano's personal automobile parked in the vicinity of that warehouse structure. The worker fell several meters from a ladder during the maintenance operation. Family members and their legal representative pointed out that the distance between the warehouse and the spot where paramedics found him was impossible for Calignano to walk given the extent of his injuries. The family maintains that other individuals on the site moved him into the street before placing the emergency call and departing.
If it is true that they abandoned him in the street, I want justice for my husband, he did not deserve to be treated like this.
Scrutiny of employment records
The judicial inquiry is evaluating whether Calignano was working off the books at the time of the incident. While administrative checks indicated that Calignano was officially registered as hired on 1 October, the day before the accident, his family stated they had no knowledge of any lawful employment contract. Amura, who has two adult daughters with the deceased worker, noted that her husband had collected his regular unemployment benefits for the month of September. Family lawyer Francesco Petruzzi questioned the legitimacy and timing of the official registration record submitted immediately prior to the fatal fall.
The circumstance of the hiring immediately before the tragic event seems strange to us at the very least. The Carabinieri will clarify it. At the moment, we harbor serious doubts about this hiring.
Ongoing judicial investigation
The public prosecutor assigned to the case at the Naples North prosecution office ordered an autopsy on the victim's body to determine the precise cause of death. Law enforcement officers also seized Calignano's mobile phone for forensic inspection to reconstruct his communications in the hours leading up to the fall. Officers from the Carabinieri in Giugliano are conducting the field investigation and cross-referencing telecommunications records to identify the individual who dialed 118 to report the injured worker before leaving the area.
