Burkina Faso cuts diplomatic ties with France over 'incessant activism' and neocolonial claims
Burkina Faso's ruling junta announced on Friday the immediate severance of diplomatic relations with France, accusing the former colonial power of 'incessant activism' against its interests, neocolonial ambitions, and support for subversive networks and terrorists in the Sahel.
Diplomatic break announcement
On 26 June 2026, Burkina Faso's communications minister Gilbert Ouédraogo appeared on state television to read a government statement declaring the immediate severance of diplomatic relations with France.
The government of Burkina Faso has decided to break its diplomatic relations with the French Republic as of today.
The decision marks the culmination of years of escalating tensions between the Sahelian nation and its former colonial power, as the military junta accelerates its sovereignist and anti-Western pivot.
Accusations of neocolonial interference
The Burkinabe government accused Paris of incessant activism against its interests and openly displaying neocolonial ambitions by actively supporting subversive networks and terrorist groups that have devastated the Sahel region.
The French regime's incessant activism against Burkina Faso's interests, its neocolonial ambitions, and its active support for subversive networks and terrorists that bring mourning to the Sahel.
The statement also denounced imperialist aims on the part of France.
Sovereignist junta and previous tensions
Captain Ibrahim Traoré has led Burkina Faso since seizing power in a September 2022 coup. His government has pursued a hardline sovereignist policy, cracking down on dissent and distancing itself from Western nations, particularly France. In May 2026, the authorities banned the French-language broadcaster TV5 Monde, accusing it of disinformation and apology of terrorism.
Reassurances and openness to dialogue
Despite the diplomatic rupture, Ouagadougou stressed that the decision does not call into question the historical, human, cultural and social ties between the Burkinabe and French peoples; it targets exclusively the institutional framework. The government pledged to ensure the security of French nationals in the country and called on Burkinabe citizens to show responsibility, restraint and respect toward all expatriates. The statement concluded by reaffirming Burkina Faso's openness to dialogue with all nations on the basis of mutual respect, reciprocity and sovereign equality.
