Brentford defeat Chelsea 3-0 to leave Xabi Alonso winless in three matches

Second-half breakdown

Brentford defeated Chelsea 3-0 at the Gtech Stadium on Friday, scoring three times after the interval following a goalless first half. The opening goal arrived in the 61st minute when Mikkel Damsgaard delivered a corner towards the far post, where 20-year-old Austrian defender Jannik Schuster headed the ball back across the goalmouth. Winger Jaidon Anthony met the ball from close range to head past Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez. The strike extended Chelsea's run without a league clean sheet to 21 matches. Brentford extended their lead in the 83rd minute during a counter-attack after Jordan Henderson lost possession in midfield. Kevin Schade broke clear on goal, and although Martinez saved the initial shot, Brazilian forward Igor Thiago converted the rebound for his first league goal of the season. In stoppage time, Schade delivered a cross from the right flank for substitute Fabio Carvalho to tap in Brentford's third goal.

Defensive troubles for Chelsea

The defeat leaves Chelsea in seventh place in the Premier League table after five matches, having collected seven points from two wins, one draw, and two losses. Chelsea have conceded 12 goals across their opening five league fixtures, the highest tally of any team in the division. The team opened the season under manager Xabi Alonso with victories over Fulham and Brighton & Hove Albion before dropping points in a 2-1 loss at Arsenal and a 2-2 draw with Hull City. Alonso became the sixth manager in Premier League history to concede two or more goals in each of his first five matches in charge. Chelsea were also kept scoreless for the first time this season after scoring 10 goals in their previous four league fixtures.

“It's about 95 minutes. We have not been able to keep that level throughout these few games in the start of the season, and it's something that we have to do better.”

Brentford climb to third

The victory moved Brentford to third in the Premier League standings behind Arsenal and Manchester City, maintaining an unbeaten start of two wins and three draws from five fixtures. The result marked Brentford's first home league win over Chelsea since 1938, as well as their first home victory against their west London neighbours since gaining promotion to the top flight in 2021. Brentford deployed a compact defensive structure in the first half, with Vitaly Janelt tracking Cole Palmer and Jaidon Anthony tracking back to cover left wing-back Pep Chavarria. Both Janelt and Schade featured a day after receiving call-ups to the German national team under coach Jürgen Klopp.

“I felt there was a performance bubbling. I just could see that in the players' eyes last couple of days. The approach has been really focused and I thought in the second half in particular we showed exactly what we are.”

Squad rotation and international break

Chelsea played without striker Joao Pedro, who was sidelined with a knee injury, while club captain Reece James and midfielder Moises Caicedo remained unavailable due to injury. Caicedo has played 14 minutes this season, and summer arrival Marco Palestra has yet to feature for the club. Alonso made five changes to his starting lineup, giving forward Danny Welbeck his first league start for Chelsea and awarding 36-year-old Jordan Henderson his debut against his former side. Alonso also brought on 16-year-old midfielder Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli as a late substitute, making him the youngest player to appear for Chelsea in the Premier League. Chelsea will have a three-week break for international fixtures before returning to Premier League action at home against Bournemouth on 10 October.
