Alex Bregman hospitalized with facial injury after foul ball strike in Cubs 9-1 win

On-deck circle incident

Chicago Cubs third baseman Alex Bregman sustained a facial injury during the fourth inning of Sunday's game against the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park. Standing near the on-deck circle approximately 20 feet from home plate, Bregman was struck near his left eye by a sharp foul ball. The incident occurred with Chicago holding a 5-0 lead when Reds right-handed reliever Luis Mey delivered an inside fastball to left-handed batter Michael Busch. Busch checked his swing, but the pitch made contact with the bat, bounced off the dirt, and ricocheted directly into Bregman. Bregman immediately covered the left side of his face with his hand and jogged toward the dugout.

Medical evaluation and clubhouse reaction

Dugout trainers applied a towel to slow bleeding from Bregman's nose and face before escorting him down the steps and into the clubhouse for further treatment. Bregman was transported to a local hospital for X-rays and CT scans to determine whether he sustained structural fractures to his cheekbone. Manager Craig Counsell addressed reporters after Chicago's 9-1 victory, stating that the team waited on hospital results before deciding if Bregman would travel with the club back to Chicago.

He got hit in the left cheekbone essentially, under the eye. I don't know anything more than that right now. He was bleeding from his nose a little. There's some swelling. It's a terrible, terrible accident. We hope he's OK.

Busch noted the velocity of the pitch and the unpredictability of the ricochet when speaking after the contest.

It just happens so fast. [Mey] is throwing the ball hard and it comes off hard. Any time it enters the head area, it's always a scary thing. We try to focus on the game, but it's tough. Hopefully he's OK, first and foremost.

Cubs outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong also voiced concern for his teammate following the game, calling the sequence an unusual occurrence.

You just hope your friend is OK. That's the news that I'm hoping for. But scary stuff. Such a rarity.

In-game substitutions and lineup adjustments

Following Bregman's departure, Chicago reshuffled its defensive alignment to finish the contest. Matt Shaw entered as a pinch hitter for Bregman and remained in the game at second base, while Pedro Ramirez shifted across the diamond from second to third base. Prior to his exit, Bregman had recorded an RBI single in the first inning to collect his 89th RBI of the year and later walked and scored in the third inning. Chicago maintained control of the matchup, extending its five-run advantage into a 9-1 victory.
