Romanian police investigate brawl between parents at under-15 girls' handball match in Timișoara
Police in Timișoara have opened an inquiry after fathers traded punches in the stands during an under-15 girls' handball game, prompting the Romanian Handball Federation to convene an emergency board meeting.
Altercation in Timișoara stands
A physical fight broke out between parents in the stands during an under-15 girls' handball match on 4 October 2026 at the Constantin Jude Sports Hall, also known as Sala Olimpia, in Timișoara. The fixture brought together host club LPS Banatul Timișoara and visiting side CSC Millenium Giarmata for the second round of the national championship Series P. Disagreements among spectators began after contentious refereeing decisions during the game. Witnesses stated that the father of one player climbed over spectator seats into the section occupied by opposing parents and began striking another man. The two men exchanged punches and pushed each other across rows of seats while nearby spectators intervened to separate them.
On-court tensions and refereeing penalties
The match was marked by high tension on the court prior to the brawl in the stands. Referees Cristina Râpă and Mirela Morariu issued a combined 20 two-minute exclusions during the match, penalising LPS Banatul 12 times and Millenium Giarmata 8 times. The officials also disqualified LPS Banatul coach Attila Horvath from the bench. Reports on the final score varied between sources, with accounts recording either an 18–28 or a 12–30 victory for Millenium Giarmata. Players aged 13 and 14 watched the physical altercation unfold from the court. Several young athletes began screaming, and one girl ran toward the perimeter of the stands to gesture for the adults to halt before covering her face in distress.

Public reaction and coach response
Video footage of the altercation spread across social media platforms after the match concluded. Adriana Beldiman, a handball coach at HC Beldiman Arad, shared the recording on Facebook alongside a public critique of adult conduct at junior sporting events. She argued that adults had failed in their role as mentors for the youth competitors on the court.
At an under-15 girls' national championship handball match, instead of watching the girls play, encouraging them, and enjoying the sport, parents fought in the stands. Children aged 13 to 14 were on the court while parents fought on the sidelines. What example are we setting for them? What message are we sending?
Beldiman noted that the emotional distress of the young players was audible throughout the recording, urging parents to respect fair play and youth safety.
Police investigation and federation review
The Timiș County Police Inspectorate initiated an inquiry after reviewing the viral footage. Officers from the 2nd Urban Police Station in Timișoara are working to establish the circumstances of the brawl and identify the men involved. Law enforcement officials confirmed that neither party had filed a formal criminal complaint as of 5 October 2026. In response to the brawl, the Romanian Handball Federation condemned the violence and referred the incident to its Disciplinary Commission for review during its next scheduled meeting. The federation also convened an urgent session of its Administrative Board to determine institutional measures under its Safeguarding Policy.
The measures that the federation is considering fall within the principles of the FRH Safeguarding Policy, which places the safety, integrity, dignity, and well-being of children at the centre of sporting activity and establishes the principle of zero tolerance toward any form of violence.
The federation reiterated that official regulations require parents to maintain respectful behaviour toward players, coaching staffs, match officials, and other spectators at all competitions.
