A verbal clash over a €5 million redevelopment project escalated into a physical confrontation at the Ilioupoli municipal council on Tuesday, forcing a suspension of the session and a blackout of the live online broadcast.
The trigger
A session of the Ilioupoli municipal council descended into chaos on the afternoon of Tuesday, 9 June 2026, while mayor Stathis Psyrropoulos was addressing the chamber. The flashpoint came when deputy mayor for culture Giannis Tavoularis reacted furiously to a comment from a female citizen attending the meeting. Tavoularis later claimed the woman had called him a derogatory name, prompting his aggressive response and movement toward her.
Escalation
What began as a heated exchange quickly spiralled. Opposition councillor and former deputy mayor Giannis Antzinas attempted to intervene and de-escalate the situation, but was himself attacked by an advisor to the mayor. Antzinas lost his composure and had to be physically restrained by other attendees to prevent the situation from worsening further. Video footage circulating online captures him shouting angrily, insisting he had been verbally assaulted.

As the confrontation unfolded, the live internet stream of the council meeting was abruptly cut, plunging the feed into darkness. Remote viewers were left without a complete picture of the events that followed. The redevelopment at the centre of the dispute
The meeting had been called to discuss the Chalkikaki area redevelopment project, a bioclimatic upgrade with a total budget of approximately €5 million. The Hellenic Public Properties Company (ETAD) has indicated willingness to cede the entire area to the Municipality of Ilioupoli in exchange for a lease tied to the project. Opposition councillor Thodoris Papadatos, of the "ILIOU-Polis, Human City" faction, claimed the municipal authority had convened the council suddenly on Friday, 5 June 2026, to decide on approving the concession proposal.
Aftermath
After a prolonged period of tension, tempers eventually cooled and the council session resumed. The incident has drawn widespread attention in Greek media, with multiple outlets describing the scenes as resembling a boxing ring.
