Heaviest home defeat

Eintracht Braunschweig inflicted the heaviest home defeat in 1. FC Magdeburg's 2. Bundesliga history, winning 6-1 (4-0) on the opening day of the 2026-27 season. Before 28,508 spectators, the visitors needed little time to expose a disorganised Magdeburg defence, scoring three times in eleven first-half minutes and adding a fourth from the penalty spot before the break. The result extended Magdeburg's unwanted record: the club has never won an opening match in the 2. Bundesliga. The previous worst home defeat stood at 0-5 against Preußen Münster in May 2025. Magdeburg had approached the season with optimism after a summer of 10 new signings and 15 departures, but the overhaul produced no cohesion on the pitch.

How the match unfolded

The match started with a delay after one of the goal nets had to be secured with cable ties. Once underway, Braunschweig, coached by Lars Kornetka, pressed aggressively and countered with efficiency. Aaron Opoku opened the scoring in the 15th minute, finishing from a half-right position after Sven Köhler's pass. Jan Urbich doubled the lead in the 21st minute, running clear onto a through-ball from Fabio Kaufmann and beating goalkeeper Dominik Reimann, then repeated the pattern five minutes later, this time from Samuel di Benedetto's pass, to make it 3-0.

Magdeburg's situation worsened when defender Herbert Bockhorn was sent off in the 32nd minute for a hard challenge on Di Michele Sanchez near the halfway line. A foul by Daniel Hyryläinen on Samuel Sturm led referee Felix Prigan, after VAR intervention, to award a penalty, which Mehmed Aydin converted in the 44th minute for 4-0 at halftime.

Brief response, swift reply

Magdeburg made a substitution at the break, bringing on Piere Nadjombe for Moritz-Broni Kwarteng, and pulled one back through Mateusz Zukowski's counter-attack finish in the 49th minute. The hope lasted barely a minute: Samuel di Benedetto restored the four-goal cushion in the 50th. Florian Flick added a sixth in the 61st, and some home supporters had already left the stadium by then, with the first departures seen after the 1-5.

Reaction from the club

Sport director Peer Jaekel was the first Magdeburg official to face the media after the match, describing the opening 30 minutes as worse than what followed.

If you take the first 90 minutes of a season, you could not have started worse. The first 30 minutes until the red card were worse for me than what came after.

Head coach Petrik Sander, who had named four summer signings in his starting eleven (Paul Jaeckel, Anselmo Garcia MacNulty, Moritz-Broni Kwarteng and Emmanuel Iyoha), apologised for the performance and pointed to a possible mismatch in expectations.

We looked unsettled from the first minute. I don't know a reason, but I have a suspicion. I believe that one or the other had a different expectation in their head and then landed so bitterly.

Sander rejected sweeping personnel changes, insisting the squad had the quality to recover. Vice-captain Tobias Müller stressed the need to process the defeat quickly, with the next match away in Osnabrück offering a chance to restart the season.

Other opening-day results

Bundesliga relegated side 1. FC Heidenheim edged VfL Osnabrück 4-3, with Marvin Pieringer scoring an 89th-minute winner before 15,000 spectators. Karlsruher SC beat Arminia Bielefeld 2-1 through two Moritz Broschinski goals in front of 29,896 fans. Holstein Kiel surrendered a 2-0 lead at Darmstadt 98, drawing 2-2 after Aleksandar Vukotic, who had earlier conceded the opener, scored an 86th-minute equaliser.
