Braunschweig demolish Magdeburg 6:1 on 2. Bundesliga opening day

Braunschweig storm to the top

Eintracht Braunschweig opened the 2. Bundesliga season with a 6:1 demolition of 1. FC Magdeburg in the neighborhood derby, watched by 28,508 spectators. The match began with a delay after torn netting on one goal had to be repaired with cable ties. Once underway, the hosts initially dominated possession, but Braunschweig's aggressive pressing and rapid counters overwhelmed a Magdeburg side that has never won an opening fixture in the 2. Bundesliga. Aaron Opoku struck first in the 15th minute, set up by Max Marie's incisive through ball that bypassed the easier option of new signing Yann Sturm. Jan Urbich, a new signing from Borussia Mönchengladbach, then scored twice in five minutes (21', 26') to put the visitors 3:0 up. Mehmet Can Aydin converted a penalty in the 44th minute to make it 4:0 at halftime.

Magdeburg's Herbert Bockhorn received a red card in the 32nd minute for a crude foul at midfield, effectively ending the contest before the break. Mateusz Zukowski pulled one back for the ten men in the 49th minute, but Samuele Di Benedetto restored the four-goal cushion a minute later and Florian Flick headed in the sixth in the 61st. The result was Magdeburg's heaviest home defeat in the 2. Bundesliga, surpassing a 0:5 loss to Preußen Münster from May 2025. Braunschweig, coached by Lars Kornetka, also won in Magdeburg on the opening day last season, though that match finished 1:0. Magdeburg had approached the campaign with optimism after a squad overhaul of 10 arrivals and 15 departures, but their defence showed enormous gaps throughout.

Heidenheim edge seven-goal thriller

Relegated from the Bundesliga, 1. FC Heidenheim marked their return to the second tier with a 4:3 win over promoted VfL Osnabrück before 15,000 fans. Budu Siwsiwadze opened the scoring in the 10th minute and thought he had a second in the 15th, only for it to be ruled out for offside. Niklas Wiemann headed Osnabrück level in the 23rd minute, but Marcel Costly restored Heidenheim's lead six minutes later. David Kopacz equalised again in the 34th with a fine strike. Jan Schöppner headed Heidenheim 3:2 up in first-half stoppage time, Marvin Pieringer added a fourth in the 89th minute, and Robin Meißner converted a handball penalty in the 92nd. Frank Schmidt, now in his 20th season as Heidenheim head coach, saw his side collect three points. Osnabrück, promoted after the best second half of their 3rd-league history, showed they can compete at the higher level.

Karlsruhe win, Kiel falter

Karlsruher SC defeated Arminia Bielefeld 2:1 before 29,896 spectators at the Karlsruher Wildpark, with Moritz Broschinski scoring both goals (35', 78'). Marvin Mehlem pulled one back for Bielefeld in the 80th minute. The match pitted two new second-division coaches against each other, with Karlsruhe's Maximilian Senft getting the better of Bielefeld's Oliver Kirch. Holstein Kiel, under coach Tim Walter, squandered a 2:0 halftime lead at Darmstadt 98 and settled for a 2:2 draw. Guillermo Balzi, a product of Newell's Old Boys, scored from a counter in the 9th minute after a defensive error by Aleksandar Vukotic, and Phil Harres added a second in the 42nd, celebrating with a salto. Lee Ho-jae pulled one back in the 76th and Vukotic atoned for his earlier mistake by scoring the equaliser in the 86th. Darmstadt had lost forwards Fraser Hornby to VfL Wolfsburg and Isac Lidberg to Borussia Mönchengladbach during the off-season.
