Braga host Sporting on Friday, four points apart, as Rui Borges seeks a first win
Sporting, unbeaten and third with 15 points, travel to Braga on Friday at 20:15, six points behind leader FC Porto. Borges has never beaten the hosts as Sporting coach.
Two sides under pressure
Sporting travel to the Estádio Municipal de Braga on Friday 9 October, kick-off 20:15, unbeaten but third in the Primeira Liga with 15 points and six behind leader FC Porto. Braga, sixth with 11 points and a game in hand, sit four points below the visitors. Rui Borges goes into the match under pressure after draws with Famalicão (1-1) and Arouca (2-2), which he acknowledged had left some unease. Frederico Varandas has given him a public vote of confidence, and Borges said he has felt that backing since his first day in charge. Braga coach Carlos Vicens, in charge for 15 months, answered questions about the pressure around him at his press conference.
Even when the team wins and does things well, the first one who tries to improve is me.
Absences and selection
Borges said Sporting will travel to Braga with the squad still incomplete.
We are going to Braga without ever having trained with the whole group.
Luis Suárez, Maxi Araújo and Rodrigo Zalazar returned from international duty this week, and Borges said their availability will only be judged close to kick-off. Ibrahima Ba is back in the squad after about six weeks out with an injury, while Gonçalo Inácio, Rui Silva and Jesse Derry have resumed training at Alcochete. Vagiannidis and Nuno Santos are under medical care, and Borges has called up B-team players to cover the absences. On the Braga side, captain Ricardo Horta leads the attack alongside Pau Víctor and Jonas Wind, who has recovered from injury, with João Moutinho in midfield. Asked about Braga's style, Borges described the hosts in terms that frame his game plan.
In defensive terms, they are one of the most aggressive teams in high pressing, very intense and competitive.
A fixture that keeps ending level
Borges's three meetings with Braga as Sporting coach all ended level, the most recent a 2-2 draw at the Pedreira in March. Diário de Notícias noted that Sporting have not gone three consecutive league games without beating Braga since 2018. Borges cited Braga's five wins from five home games this season, with no goals conceded. He also acknowledged that in those three matches Sporting let leads slip after the 90th minute, and said the team must stay focused on small details.
- Sporting 1-1 Braga
- Sporting 1-1 Braga
- Braga 2-2 Sporting
Form and goals
Sporting have scored 17 goals in seven league games this season and conceded eight. Braga have 7 goals from six matches, following a goalless draw with Santa Clara. Zalazar returns to Braga in a Sporting shirt after a transfer last summer.
- Sporting (7 matches)
- 17 goals
- Braga (6 matches)
- 7 goals
Referee and what comes next
João Pinheiro of AF Porto will referee the match. Borges said the team selection will be decided on the day, with fitness assessments continuing until kick-off. Sporting have drawn their last three games, and the visitors need a result that ends their run of stalled points. Kick-off is set for 20:15 on Friday 9 October.
