4-year-old boy drowns in beach bar pool on Paros, manslaughter-by-negligence probe ordered against parents and owner

What happened

A 4-year-old boy was found unconscious in a pool at a beach bar on the Greek island of Paros on Saturday, 8 August 2026. According to reports, two young women who were near the pool spotted the child, while his parents were reportedly at the sea. The beach bar's bartender jumped into the water and pulled the boy from the pool. EKAB ambulance crews arrived and performed CPR at the scene, but the child did not respond. He was then taken to the Paros Health Centre, where doctors continued resuscitation efforts. Despite their attempts, the child was unresponsive and his death was confirmed.

Legal proceedings

A prosecutor has ordered the formation of a case file for possible manslaughter by negligence (ανθρωποκτονία από αμέλεια) against both the parents and the beach bar owner. The parents, who have a second small child, were arrested and subsequently released by prosecutor order. The beach bar owner remains in custody and is expected to appear before the Syros prosecutor on the morning of Sunday, 9 August. According to reports, the owner is a registered lifeguard (ναυαγοσώστης).
