A farewell in Mumbles

Hundreds of fans lined the streets of Mumbles, a coastal village on Swansea's southwestern edge, on Saturday as Bonnie Tyler's coffin was brought home. The hearse, carrying her coffin draped in the Welsh flag and accompanied by a framed photograph of the singer, made its way through the village as the crowd burst into applause. Some threw flowers onto the hearse. Thousands of people flocked to the streets, according to an AFP reporter on the scene, while others gathered outside the singer's former home from the early hours of the morning to leave floral tributes.

Tyler, born Gaynor Hopkins, died on July 8 at age 75 in a hospital in Portugal. Her family said she passed away as a result of an unspecified illness she was being treated for. Her death followed a hospitalization in May in Faro, where she had a home, for emergency intestinal surgery. She was subsequently placed in an induced coma for five weeks in June, though her medical team had expressed confidence she would recover.

From coal miner's daughter to global star

Tyler grew up in a council house in Neath, Wales, the daughter of a coal miner, and is survived by her husband of more than 50 years, Robert Sullivan. She was discovered by talent scout Roger Bell in a club in Swansea and released her first single, "Lost in France," in 1977. That same year, her country-pop ballad "It's a Heartache" reached number four on the UK singles chart and number three on the US Billboard Hot 100.

Her biggest hit, "Total Eclipse of the Heart," arrived in 1983 and topped the charts on both sides of the Atlantic, making her the first Welsh artist to score a number one in the United States. The song has amassed more than 1 billion streams, boosted by solar eclipses in 2017, 2024, and the one this week. She earned three Grammy nominations, represented Britain at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2013, finishing 19th, and was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire in 2022 by Queen Elizabeth II for her services to music.

Fans and community pay tribute

Among those who travelled to Mumbles was 18-year-old Carys Edwards, who came with her mother Melanie Smith, 53. Edwards called Tyler "an inspiration to everybody" and said the news of her death was "such a heartbreak to all of us."

Her music touched a lot of people, especially me. I'm quite surprised how many people came here today, but then not as well, because she was such an icon.

Smith added that Tyler was "a Swansea girl" who "didn't forget that." Michael Bone, 58, and his partner Alan Hawkins, 54, travelled from central England to pay their respects. Sabine Neumann and her son Enrico came from Berlin on Friday for the tribute and Monday's ceremony. Tributes following Tyler's death also came from Catherine Zeta-Jones, Bryan Adams, and Rod Stewart.

What happens next

A celebration of Tyler's life for family and friends will take place at St Mary's Church in Swansea on Monday from midday. The coffin will then travel through her hometown in Neath Port Talbot at approximately 13:20 BST before a private family service. The funeral will be broadcast live for fans worldwide. A funeral notice from William Pressdee Funeralcare, on behalf of the family, said Tyler would be remembered as "a warm, generous artist whose music touched generations and continues to fill dance floors and karaoke booths around the world."
