Ilie Bolojan Rejects Sorin Grindeanu as Premier, Urging Fiscal Discipline Before Rating Review
Interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan stated that PSD leader Sorin Grindeanu is not a viable candidate to lead Romania, warning that the incoming cabinet must reduce public spending ahead of a crucial sovereign credit rating decision.
Criticism of Grindeanu and executive leadership
Interim Prime Minister and National Liberal Party (PNL) president Ilie Bolojan addressed the government formation process during an interview broadcast Wednesday evening on Digi24. Bolojan dismissed the suitability of Social Democratic Party (PSD) leader Sorin Grindeanu to take over the head of government. In an evaluation of coalition dynamics, the interim prime minister argued that while Grindeanu might manage the executive without upsetting political stakeholders, such an approach would fail to address Romania's structural challenges. Bolojan stated that the country cannot afford a premier whose primary attribute is avoiding friction at the expense of necessary administrative measures.
If it were like that, in a cynical way, but Romania does not deserve that, the best prime minister, who would do everything without bothering anyone, would be Sorin Grindeanu. But Romania does not deserve such a situation.
Fiscal imbalances and sovereign credit ratings
Turning to public finances, Bolojan insisted that future governments are obligated to reduce state expenditures because the national economy can no longer bear accumulated budgetary imbalances. The interim prime minister argued that halting wasteful and unjustified spending does not constitute austerity, describing fiscal restraint instead as basic responsibility and respect toward citizens. Maintaining credibility is directly connected to sovereign borrowing conditions and financial stability. Bolojan stated that Romania faced three separate financial assessments regarding its sovereign credit rating and international confidence. While the country successfully navigated the first two reviews during the summer, the third financial rating review is scheduled for completion on 2 October 2026.
It is difficult to maintain market confidence in difficult conditions if the person who is prime minister does not transmit this confidence and is not a serious person.

Presidential accountability in government formation
Bolojan emphasized that maintaining market credibility requires decision-makers who refrain from acting as economic pyromaniacs or pledging public funds that do not exist in the state treasury. Addressing the role of the head of state in resolving the executive crisis, Bolojan asserted that the president shares direct accountability for the country's trajectory. If the president designates a government that leads Romania into an economic dead end, that outcome will reflect directly on the presidency. Bolojan noted that the head of state cannot evade institutional responsibility, making the selection of premier a consequential choice for the presidency.
PNL review process and parliamentary consultations
The National Liberal Party intends to formalize its stance once a nomination is designated by the head of state. Bolojan indicated that the PNL National Political Bureau will convene to analyze any formal proposal and determine the party's broader legislative strategy. Liberal leaders plan to hold direct discussions with the designated candidate, approaching the appointment with institutional respect while prioritizing fiscal stability. Bolojan also confirmed that he held consultations with the president before Wednesday's parliamentary vote. PNL will establish its parliamentary voting position based on whether the nominated cabinet can protect the country's sovereign credit rating and manage current economic stakes.
