The 45-year-old presenter Jan Böhmermann initiated the departure, indicating his intention to develop a different television format rather than prolong the current series. Production staff members learned about the conclusion of the programme on the afternoon of 18 September 2026. Because many crew members operate under project-based contracts, their existing employment arrangements expire alongside the broadcast contract in December. The format conclusion also led to the cancellation of the live tour titled Auf! Auf! Ehrenfeld!, which Böhmermann had planned to stage with the show's house orchestra, the Rundfunk-Tanzorchester Ehrenfeld, in early 2027. In 2025, ZDF and the presenter had agreed to only a single-year contract extension, alongside a reduction in the annual episode count, which industry observers viewed as an initial move toward winding down the series.

Over its six-year broadcast run, the show received multiple television honours, including the Grimme-Preis, the Hanns-Joachim-Friedrichs-Preis, and three German Television Awards. Reflecting on the evolution of the format during an exhibition project at Berlin's Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Böhmermann noted that the early years before 2020 were subversive and unpredictable, whereas the subsequent phase adopted a more journalistic and intellectual approach that eventually began repeating familiar patterns.

Network executives expressed an interest in maintaining their working relationship with Böhmermann on future television projects.
