Body found in search for British teenager missing in Romanian mountains since November
A body believed to be that of George Smyth, an 18-year-old geology student from Bristol who vanished in Romania's Bucegi mountains in November, has been found after a nine-month search.
Disappearance and emergency call
George Smyth, an 18-year-old geology student at the University of Bristol originally from Newport, Shropshire, disappeared in November 2025 while hiking alone in the Bucegi mountains of Romania, near the village of Bran. The village is known for its castle associated with the Dracula legend. Smyth had set off from the Poiana Brașov area heading toward Bran. He reached the Țigănești Valley, where he placed an emergency call to rescue teams requesting help. A representative of the local mountain rescue service told the BBC that the 18-year-old "was disoriented, physically exhausted and already showing signs of hypothermia" when the call was received. Conditions at the time were described as extremely severe, with strong wind, heavy snow, and dense fog. Snow reached depths of more than 2 metres, further complicating access to the area where Smyth was stranded. Rescuers described the location as a "very isolated and hard-to-reach mountain zone."
Search operation
The search and rescue operation mobilised Salvamont mountain rescue teams, thermal imaging cameras, sniffer dogs, drones, and a Black Hawk helicopter. The canine unit, drones, and helicopters were deployed alongside ground teams combing the rugged terrain of the Bucegi range. On Wednesday, August 12, 2026, mountain rescue teams announced they had resumed searches in "previously indicated areas, beneath rock walls, in gullies, and in hard-to-access sectors," but without success. The search had continued without interruption since November, with the family praising Salvamont for working "tirelessly" despite "very difficult and often dangerous conditions." The family noted that the rescue team had "remained in constant communication, helping us greatly throughout this awful time." The operation spanned roughly nine months, through harsh winter and summer conditions in the Romanian mountains.
Body found
On Saturday, August 15, 2026, Avon and Somerset Police announced that a body had been found in the Bucegi mountain region and was believed to be that of George Smyth. Formal identification had yet to take place. Officers informed Smyth's family of the development, and the family is being supported by a family liaison officer. Forensic enquiries are set to take place to confirm the identity of the body before the deceased is repatriated to the United Kingdom. Efforts will be made to return Smyth's body to Britain once official identification is completed. The discovery brings to an end a search that began when Smyth failed to return from his solo hike in November.

Family statement
Smyth's family released a statement expressing their grief and gratitude to those involved in the search.
We are all devastated by George's death. He was the best of us and is deeply missed by his younger brothers, family and friends.
The family also thanked Avon and Somerset Police and the University of Bristol, saying they had "gone above and beyond to try and find George, and to support us as a family." They said that while the news was "incredibly painful," the "torture of waiting is finally over" and they could now focus on bringing George home and saying goodbye. They asked for privacy as they continue to come to terms with the loss.
