Boavista FC creditors reject recovery plan as club seeks new deal by end of October
Mortgage creditors at the Vila Nova de Gaia Commerce Court rejected Boavista FC's debt restructuring plan, leaving the club until 31 October 2026 to submit a revised proposal.
Creditors reject debt restructuring plan
Creditors of Boavista Futebol Clube rejected the club's proposed recovery and business plan during an assembly held at 09:30 on Wednesday at the Vila Nova de Gaia Commerce Court. The negative vote came primarily from secured mortgage creditors, who determined that the proposal failed to safeguard their financial interests. Insolvency administrator Maria Clarisse Barros informed the assembly at the start of proceedings that the club had satisfied the legal conditions outlined in its court reopening order. Following the vote, club president Rui Garrido Pereira announced that Boavista will draft an amended restructuring framework before 31 October 2026. Garrido Pereira stated that the club remains fully operational while discussions continue.
He outlined the board's immediate strategy following the court decision.
The board will continue to work with those same creditors, with a view to presenting by the end of the current month a plan capable of receiving a favorable vote for the club's recovery.
Legal and financial insolvency path
The vote marks another stage in a prolonged legal process involving total club debts exceeding 150 million euros. Creditors initially approved the liquidation of the club in September 2025, but the court granted permission to continue operations under strict financial conditions. Activity was halted in July 2026 by administrator Maria Clarisse Barros after Boavista failed to deposit funds required for monthly operational expenses. The court subsequently authorized a resumption of operations in August 2026, conditioned on Boavista meeting all current operating costs through the conclusion of the 2026/2027 sports season. This insolvency proceeding is legally autonomous from Boavista SAD, the club's professional sports company, whose own liquidation plan was approved by creditors in September 2026.
- Creditors approve liquidation of Boavista FC, but the court permits continued operations.
- Insolvency administrator Maria Clarisse Barros halts club operations over unpaid monthly expenses.
- Court authorizes reopening of activities conditioned on paying operating costs through the 2026/27 season.
- Creditors approve the separate liquidation of professional sporting entity Boavista SAD.
- Secured creditors reject the recovery and business plan at the Vila Nova de Gaia Commerce Court.
- Deadline for Boavista FC board to present a revised recovery proposal to creditors.
Repayment framework and sporting operations
The rejected plan sought to avoid the full sale of club assets by generating revenue from the Estádio do Bessa, sporting disciplines, membership dues, brand licensing, and commercial leases. Under the proposed model, all state tax and social security debts would be settled in full across 150 monthly installments. Suppliers and mortgage lenders were offered partial settlements across different repayment schedules. The financial collapse threatens 31 sports disciplines and approximately 1,500 active athletes representing the club. Founded in 1903, the Porto-based institution counts one Primeira Liga championship from 2000/2001, five Portuguese Cups, three Super Cups, and two Segunda Liga titles in its trophy cabinet.

Fan reactions and governance dispute
The outcome prompted severe criticism from the Panteras Negras Footballers Club, an association formed in July 2025 by Boavista members and supporters that competes in the Porto Football Association district divisions. The group accused Garrido Pereira of mismanagement and said the rejection stemmed from a lack of creditor trust in current leadership.
Today, the disappearance of Boavista Futebol Clube was decided, a centenary institution of national and international recognition for merit and history.
The supporters group stated that it will work directly with primary creditors to reverse the outcome and pursue alternative preservation measures. Garrido Pereira maintained that the club will not halt its ongoing sporting programs while negotiations continue over the revised proposal due at the end of October.
