Fire destroys 3,000-square-metre sanitaryware plant in Bielsko, prompting chemical warning
Nearly 150 firefighters contained a fire at a bathroom fixture plant in Bielsko on Thursday night, with authorities issuing safety warnings over toxic resin fumes.
Outbreak at the Bielsko manufacturing facility
A fire broke out at an industrial manufacturing plant in the village of Bielsko, located within Gmina Międzychód in the Wielkopolska region, on Thursday evening. Emergency services received the initial alarm shortly after 18:00 on 28 August. The blaze engulfed an entire production hall covering an area of approximately 3,000 square metres. As confirmed by Martin Halasz, press officer for the Wielkopolska State Fire Service (PSP), the facility was actively used for manufacturing bathroom sanitary elements, specifically shower trays. The fabrication of these products relies on industrial resins, chemical compounds that release dangerous, toxic gases when burned.
Large response and strategic command
To counter the flames, authorities dispatched nearly 150 firefighters operating across 30 separate crews, combining professional units from the State Fire Service and voluntary personnel from Volunteer Fire Service branches. The operation also required specialized hazardous materials units, prompting the deployment of the Chemical and Ecological Rescue Group from Poznań. Due to the high concentration of emergency personnel and equipment, an operational group from the Wielkopolska Provincial Fire Headquarters arrived on the scene. Strategic command of the firefighting effort was assumed by Senior Brigadier Tomasz Wiśniewski, deputy provincial commander of the PSP. Emergency teams battled the flames for approximately five hours before successfully bringing the spread of the fire under control.

Chemical warnings and public safety measures
The burning resins generated a heavy plume of dark smoke and chemical combustion products, raising immediate air quality concerns for nearby communities. In response, the Government Centre for Security (RCB) distributed a mobile alert message to residents in the surrounding territory, instructing them to close residential windows tightly and avoid approaching the incident site. Municipal and provincial fire authorities monitored atmospheric conditions and the path of the plume as it drifted away from dense population centres.
Fortunately, the fire gas cloud moved towards open ground, not posing an excessive threat to the residents of Międzychód.
State Fire Service officials confirmed that no people were injured in the blaze, with zero casualties recorded among plant personnel or the emergency crews operating on the perimeter.
Morning damping-down and demolition work
Although the main body of fire was contained within five hours of the initial call, damping-down operations continued throughout the night and into Friday morning. Firefighters methodically soaked smouldering debris within the interior of the ruined 3,000-square-metre hall to prevent hidden flare-ups beneath structural rubble. The remaining fire brigades on site commenced the controlled dismantling and demolition of burned building elements that posed collapse hazards. Crews maintained their presence at the facility through Friday morning to conclude mop-up activities and ensure total extinguishment of the site.
