Spanish singer Beret arrested over alleged April sexual assault, released with restrictions
The 29-year-old Andalusian artist was detained in Seville on Thursday, just days after performing for Pope Leo XIV. A judge imposed a restraining order and a three-month passport withdrawal.
Arrest and judicial decision
Spanish singer Francisco Javier Álvarez Beret, known as Beret, was arrested by National Police in Seville on 11 June 2026 over an alleged sexual assault that took place in April 2026. The arrest occurred shortly after his return from a high-profile performance in Barcelona. He was brought before the duty court of Violence against Women number 4 in Seville, which handles gender-based cases.
After his appearance, the judge ordered provisional release with precautionary measures. Beret is barred from communicating with or approaching within 500 metres of the complainant, and must surrender his passport for three months. The case is being investigated under articles 178.1 and 179.1 of the Spanish Criminal Code, covering sexual assault. Beret exercised his right to remain silent during the hearing.
Public performances in days before arrest
Beret had performed twice in public events linked to Pope Leo XIV’s visit to Spain. On Saturday, 7 June, he sang at a vigil in Madrid’s Plaza de Lima. On Tuesday, 9 June, he appeared at the Olympic Stadium in Barcelona before roughly 40,000 attendees, singing ‘Superhéroes’ with a children’s choir. A day after returning to Seville, he was arrested.

Concert cancellation
Elche city council announced on 11 June that Beret’s scheduled appearance at the NITS de Festa festival on 10 August has been cancelled. The council stated it is already working with the event producer to find a replacement act. The decision was directly linked to the news of his detention.
Artist background
Beret began his career releasing music online in 2013 and released his first album, ‘Prisma’, in 2019. According to RTVE, later albums include ‘Resiliencia’ (2002) and ‘Lo bello y lo roto’ (2025). He had launched a theatre tour for the latter album in March 2026, with dates planned across Spain through September.
Legal status
Judicial sources confirmed the imposition of a restraining order and passport seizure. The investigation remains ongoing under Seville’s specialised Violence against Women court number 2. No further details of the alleged assault have been disclosed.
