Benfica confirmed on Wednesday the signing of Portuguese international midfielder João Palhinha from Bayern Munich on a four-year contract running through 30 June 2030. In an official regulatory filing submitted to the Portuguese Securities Market Commission (CMVM), Benfica SAD stated that it acquired 100% of the player's economic rights for a fixed fee of €14 million. The transaction package includes up to €5 million in performance-related add-ons tied to pre-defined objectives, bringing the maximum total value to €19 million. The agreement also incorporates a buyout clause set at €50 million.

Squad integration and reunion with Marco Silva

The 31-year-old midfielder reported to Benfica's training ground in Seixal on Wednesday morning to complete an individual training session. Palhinha did not travel with the first-team squad to Denmark, where Benfica will play Aarhus in the second leg of the Europa League playoff for a place in the league phase. The transfer reunites Palhinha with manager Marco Silva, who previously coached him across two Premier League campaigns at Fulham. Palhinha addressed the manager's influence during his official presentation with club media.

Palhinha noted that personal factors and his family, especially his children, guided his choice to return to Portugal despite interest from English Premier League clubs. The presentation video released by the club also revealed that Palhinha has been an official Benfica member (sócio) since 2005. That detail resonated across Portuguese football because Palhinha developed in the academy of cross-town rivals Sporting CP and played for their senior team between the 2016/17 and 2021/22 seasons.
